Gopalganj/Govind Kumar. Preparations are in full swing to re -operation the historic Sabayya Airport in Gopalganj district of Bihar. The central government and district administration have intensified steps in this direction. On Tuesday, Gopalganj DM Pawan Kumar Sinha visited the Sabayya Airfield at Hathua and reviewed the construction work of the boundary wall being built at a cost of Rs 3 crore 62 lakh. This project is targeted to be completed by July 2025, after which the repair of the runway will start. Explain that this airport is being prepared for domestic flights under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN) which will open a new gate of development for Gopalganj, Siwan, and surrounding districts.
The Sabayya Airport of Gopalganj was constructed in the year 1868.
Gopalganj and Siwan’s business will increase
Built in the British period in 1868, this airport was used in World War II, but it remained neglected after independence. Spread over 473 acres, this airfield has been included in the regeneration plan for regional connectivity. Gopalganj MP Dr. Alok Kumar Suman has continuously demanded the central government to give momentum to this project. Local businessman Nirbhay Kumar said, Gopalganj and Siwan’s business will increase due to the commissioning of Sabayya Airport. Two lakh migrants living in Gulf countries will directly benefit.

Located 26 km from Gopalganj and 125 km from Gorakhpur airbase, this airport will prove to be a boon for migrants working in Gulf countries. However, the problem of encroachment remains a challenge. In 2022, the Ministry of Defense identified 1011 encroachers on 338 acres of land, which is going on to remove the process.
Demand for airport foundation stone from PM Modi
The district administration has started the work of preparing technical documents and detailed maps. Businessmen of Gopalganj have demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lay the foundation stone of the airport, so that the project gets more momentum. This airport can write a new chapter of economic development not only for Gopalganj, but also for neighboring districts of Siwan, Chhapra, and Uttar Pradesh.
