If you’re thinking of selling your home in 2025, the paint colors you choose could make you lose thousands of dollars—or increase your home’s value.
A new report by Zillow, the real estate website, found that certain paint colors can increase your home’s value by thousands of dollars, while others can hurt your resale value.
After surveying over 4,200 homebuyers across the United States, three colors came out on top as the ones buyers would pay more for—as long as they’re in the right rooms.

Green Kitchens Are Still in—Sort Of

While we may have thought the era of green kitchens was over, that’s far from true. Buyers who were surveyed said they would pay almost $1,600 more for a home if it had an olive green kitchen.
“Zillow’s study finds recent and prospective home buyers prefer muted green kitchens over all other colors,” said the press release.
But that’s not to say all greens are a safe bet for your kitchen cabinets. In fact, one of the findings of the report says that sage green kitchens could be a deterrent for certain homebuyers. In general, the era of muted neutrals is over and the time for rich, cozy hues is here.
Buyers Love Navy Blue Bedrooms and Gray Living Rooms

If your bedroom needs a bit of a color upgrade, there’s one shade that wins out above all the rest: navy blue.
“Buyers liked navy blue bedrooms the best,” the press release said. “This restful shade can increase a home’s sale price by $1,815.”
Perhaps most surprisingly, gray living rooms are the most popular color choice for that room, despite the fact that many people believe “millennial gray” is over. But, it’s not just any gray: the report says charcoal gray, which is on the darker side, is the best bet, and even works in the bedroom and on kitchen cabinets.
“Homes with a dark gray living room can sell for $2,593 more,” the press release said. “Charcoal also performed well as an alternative to olive green and navy blue in the kitchen and bedroom.”
The Worst Paint Colors for Selling Your Home
While the right paint colors can get you a decent selling price, the wrong colors can have an even bigger impact on how much your home sells for—up to $4,000 less.
Zillow’s report found that buyers would pay almost $4,000 less for daisy yellow kitchens and living rooms, so you might want to think twice before you hop on the summer yellow trend.
And perhaps least surprising is that the other worst paint color for your living room or bedroom is fire hydrant red. Either one could cost you up to $2,000.
While paint color choices are pretty personal and should reflect your own tastes while you live in your home, it might just be worth repainting before you put your house on the market.
