5 Decorating Tips for Your Deck, Straight from Designers

5 Decorating Tips for Your Deck, Straight from Designers

Key Points

  • Decks get ignored, but can easily become inviting outdoor living rooms with a few design updates.
  • Use matching furniture groups, bold accents, and avoid overcrowding to keep the space cohesive.
  • Pick multi-use pieces to save space and boost function on smaller decks.

While there is plenty of design inspiration to be found for decorating your backyard and outfitting your front porch, it seems one outdoor area is often ignored—we’re talking about your deck.

For some reason, decks seem to get the short end of the outdoor decor stick. At most, we’ll see a dining table and chairs, and maybe a few flower pots for some color. But this is a highly underappreciated space—and it’s time to change that.

We turned to a few of our favorite design pros to ask for their decor tips for this oft-forgotten space, and here’s what they had to say.

Why Is the Deck So Often Ignored?

According to Andi Morse, founder of Morse Design, it all comes down to time. If you’re not redecorating your home all at once, you’re likely moving room by room.

“I think we often focus on the interiors of the home first, then slowly make our way to outside spaces,” she says.

The great news? Now is the perfect time of year to tackle this outdoor “room.”

Make It Your Outdoor Living Room

We love the idea of creating different zones in the backyard, and Morse says your deck should be an area dedicated to conversation.

“Start with a sofa and a couple of chairs with a rug to ground the space,” she says. “An outdoor living room makes an outdoor space like a deck inviting.”

It’s All About the Accents

As John Stivale and Steven Graffam of Stivale-Graffam Home point out, decks are the perfect place for a few well-picked accessories. Graffam notes that planters are great for depth and color.

“Adding a variety of plants or small shrubs in planters of different materials and textures can enhance the style and feel of a deck,” he says.

Stivale is all for outdoor hurricane vases and large-scale candle holders, as they, “really elevate the environment.”

Mix and Match With Intention

While a mix of varying types of outdoor furniture can lend itself to a cozy outdoor atmosphere, it can also easily feel cluttered and messy. Morse says it’s best to follow some guidelines. This doesn’t, however, mean matching everything, either.

“I prefer when the sofa and lounge chairs match or the dining table and chairs match,” she says.

In general, focus on groupings and purchase these to match—then pair them with other matching groups for a truly cohesive space.

“Purchase those pieces to start, as they tend to make outdoor areas feel more pulled together,” she adds.

Don’t Overcrowd Your Space

On the other hand, if you’re working with a smaller deck, Morse warns against overcrowding.

“No one wants to hang out on a deck that makes them feel claustrophobic,” she says. “Too much furniture can do that to the space.”

Stivale agrees—and notes that most people make this mistakes because they don’t know where to start on the deck.

“Imagine how to best utilize the space and place the actual furniture,” he says. “Determine not only the best use of the space but how you will ultimately live in it.”

Graffam says the best way to make these decisions is by asking yourself a few key questions.

“Do you envision a space that is more configured for entertaining large groups of people, or do you see yourself lounging on a sofa with only your family and close friends?” he asks.

Consider Multi-Purpose Pieces

If you’re just starting out furnishing your deck, Graffam says it’s best to look for pieces that maximize efficiency—especially if you’re working with a smaller space.

“A bench that flips into a dining table, or a side table that also provides storage are great ways to maximize space and functionality,” he says. “Every square inch matters!”
