Key Points
- A fresh coat of paint, molding, or bold wallpaper can dramatically change cabinet style without a full remodel.
- Swapping hardware and using peel-and-stick options are renter-safe ways to personalize your kitchen.
- These upgrades matter because cabinets anchor the kitchen’s visuals and set the room’s tone.
Kitchen cabinets are much more than spaces for our pantry staples; they also play a key role in determining how the area looks and feels. Luckily, they’re also one of the most versatile spots to DIY and decorate, making them perfect for an upgrade.
We spoke to a designer (and DIY extraordinaire) to find out the six best ways to bring kitchen cabinets to the next level.

Try a New Coat of Paint
If you’re ready to make a big cabinet change, look no further than the paint aisle. According to DIY creator and designer Meher Goel, the color of your cabinets is just as important as the colors of your walls and tiles to create the perfect cooking ambiance.
“For cohesion, pick a cabinet paint color that complements your kitchen tiles or flooring,” Goel says. “It might mean compromising on your initial color choice, but finding harmony through color theory can make your space look customized and intentional.”

Add Some Molding

Whether you adore Scandinavian-inspired textures, vintage-style intricate detailing, or classic crown molding, the transformation possibilities are endless with this upgrade technique.
“For a traditional yet modern look, add some simple molding to the cabinets,” Goel recommends. “It creates depth and instantly adds interest in the space.”
Renters can take part in this project through the use of peel-and-stick molding, which can provide clean, minimal lines or a European museum-esque botanical look.
Try a Bold Wallpaper
Lovers of maximalist home decor (or those struggling to pick just one paint shade), can bring color to their kitchen cabinets in an even bolder way.
“Kitchen wallpaper is another great way to add pattern to the room,” Goel says. “Pick something that makes a statement without overpowering the space.”
If your cabinets have a bit more texture or dimension, don’t worry: You can still try this out by applying wallpaper on the inside of your cabinets instead.
Opt For Peel-and-Stick
Peel-and-stick wallpapers are ideal for this upgrade, especially on the smooth, glossy cabinets often seen in newer apartments and houses.
Swap Out Hardware
One of the quickest and easiest ways to instantly bring the look and feel of your kitchen cabinets to the next level is by swapping out the hardware. This renter-friendly mini makeover can be completed in just a couple of hours, and instantly undone when it’s time to move out.
“Add a touch of luxury to your cabinets by switching out the hardware,” Goel suggests.” If you’re into sustainability and want to save a pretty penny, try visiting local thrift stores.”
For homeowners and those with the ability to paint, the shade you choose can feel farmhouse, vintage, modern, or coastal, all depending on what kind of handles you install.
“Sometimes, intentionally mismatching within the same material, like gold, metal, or wood, can be a design choice that adds a playful touch and creates interest,” she adds.
Install Open Shelving
Another fast, effective, and free way to shake up the layout of your kitchen and cabinets is by removing some of the doors strategically and embracing the art of shelf styling.
“Break up the bulkiness of cabinets by adding open shelving,” Goel says. “It’s great for kitchen deco—think cookbooks, cute mugs, artwork, and beautiful sets of plates.”
For fans of the open and exposed look who also want to protect their most precious dinnerware while displaying it daily, consider the middle ground, and swap out your current doors for glass ones.
Set the Mood With Lighting

Our final upgrade option is one you’ve undoubtedly seen while scrolling TikTok: Applying the ever-popular adhesive LED light strips underneath your top or bottom rows of cabinets for a built-in look. Opt for the motion-detecting variation of this kitchen lighting for an even more luxurious feeling.
“A bit of soft mood lighting goes a long way in making a space feel inviting,” Goel shares. “To really bring everything together, opt for lighting strips under the cabinets, open shelving, and even inlaid lighting inside your cabinets—especially if they have glass doors.”
