Rio de Janeiro-Brazilian southern state of Santa Katrina caught fire from the sky on Saturday and collided with the sky, killing eight people, said firefighters.
The footage shared by the local news outlet G1 showed the smoke bills coming from the balloon in the flames as it was injured towards the ground in the municipality of Priya Grande.
On a video on social media, two people can be seen falling into the air as the fire runs on the aircraft.
Thirteen people survived and were taken to hospitals, Santa Katrina’s military fire brigade said, saying that 21 people were on the board including the pilot.
“We are in mourning. There is a tragedy. We will see how it comes out, what happened, why it happened. But now the important thing is what it can do for the state structure,” Govinho Mello said in a video on X.
Melo said that he has asked the authorities as the head of the municipality “as much as possible, to help the hospital, to take to the hospital, to relax the families.”
“According to the pilot, who is one of the remaining people, caught fire inside the basket and then started reducing the balloon. When the balloon was very close to the ground, he ordered people to jump out of the basket,” Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper said this to Priya Grande Police Officer Tiago Luiz Lemos.
“Some of them did not manage to jump. The fire increased and the balloon fell,” Lemos said.
The G1 reported that the expected flight of the balloon was 45 minutes, with the balloon reached 1000 meters, and the cost of 550 reais (about $ 100) per passenger.
Priya Grande is a common destination for hot-air ballooning, a popular activity in some parts of Brazil during the June festival, celebrating Catholic saints like St. John, whose feast day is on 24 June.
