Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar on Tuesday shot any possibility of guard change in the state government, stating that “there is nothing on the card”.

“Nothing is on the card. The general secretary has spoken. It is a voice, a party,” Shivkumar said that he and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met the top brass of Congress at the new headquarters in Delhi.

According to sources, Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar met senior Congress leaders and discussed various issues including a stampede on 4 June in Bengaluru. Sources said party president Mallikrajun Kharge and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed displeasure over the state government’s participation at the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) IPL victory ceremony, during which 11 people lost their lives in stampede, sources said.

Congress General Secretary, Organization, KC Venugopal and General Secretary in-charge for Karnataka, Randeep Surjewal, Indira Bhavan were also present during a three-hour discussion on state issues, where the party’s leadership told Siddaramaiah that the Congress government in the state should adopt a supporter-POEPL approach.

A source said that Rahul Gandhi told Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar that human life is a lot of value for the Congress party and the government should be responsible for the people.

“… We also discussed the current political situation and the recent unfortunate incident in Bengaluru. PCC President (Shivkumar) gave information about the party’s leadership and action taken by the state government on the incident.” Venugopal told reporters after the meeting.

In Karnataka, the Congress government has faced a strong criticism from the opposition BJP and JD (S), both parties held the Chief Minister and his deputy directly for the tragedy and demanded their resignation. He has also sought a special assembly session to discuss the incident.

The stampede took place in front of the Chinnaswamy Stadium on 4 June, where a large number of people gathered to attend the RCB team’s IPL victory ceremony.

Venugopal said that he informed about the leadership of Bangalore incident and action taken by the state government. He said that the CM was asked to present a report on the Stamped incident by the central leadership.

He said, “Surely, we are very worried about every human life and therefore is our party. An unfortunate incident happened and the government of Karnataka has already ordered a judicial inquiry to find out what has really happened,” he said.

Not in the nuances of the ongoing judicial inquiry in the stampede incident, he stressed that the Congress had a clear view that there should be a clear supporter attitude on the issue “.

What did CM Siddaramaiah say?

Siddaramaiah has removed himself from the stampede incident. He has said that he was informed late, and the government did not organize the stadium incident.

However, after a meeting with the Congress leadership, he said that as the most general managers of the state government, he and Shivkumar gave a briefing on the action taken in the stampede. However, he said that the incident of Kumbh Mela in the same breath should also be discussed as one in Bengaluru.

“We recently discussed the tragic incident and explained the measures taken by us. A magisterial inquiry is going on, and a judicial commission has been appointed, led by retired Justice Michael Kunha, five police officers have been suspended, intelligence officers have been transferred, and the political secretary has been relieved,” he said.

He said: “We explained these tasks, and there is a consensus that measures taken are appropriate … The Kumbh Mela incident should be discussed before addressing the issue. I am not using the Kumbh Mela deaths to protect the incident. When people die, when people die, this is human to feel sad. This incident should not be politicized.”
