UK agrees post-Brexit deal over Gibraltar

UK agrees post-Brexit deal over Gibraltar

Britain has agreed to an agreement with the European Union on the position of Gibraltar after Brexit.

The negotiations on the rules that control the border of Spain and Gibraltar have been in operation since going out of the European Union from Britain in 2020.

Britain said the agreement would be saved from the need to investigate people and goods crossing the Gibraltar-Spain limit.

For passengers arriving at Gibraltar Airport, passport checks will be conducted by Gibraltar and Spanish officials.

It is similar to the system for Eurostar passengers at St. Pancris Station in London, where passengers undergo both British and French passport control before riding in international trains.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lemi said the deal “protects the British sovereignty, supports the economy of Gibraltar and allows businesses to make long -term planning once again”.

Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo also welcomed the agreement, saying that it would “bring legal certainty to the people of Gibraltar, its businesses and those in the region who rely on stability on the border.”

The UK government said that all parties have committed to finalize the UK-EU treaty on Gibraltar as soon as possible.

Gibraltar, which is a British foreign region, is 2.6 square miles south of Spain.

Since 1713, Britain has sovereignty on Gibraltar, although it is disputed by Spain, which claims the region.

The territory position and its range with Spain have been an important viscous point and has been unresolved since Brexit.

Estimated 15,000 people cross the Gibraltar-Spain limit every day for work and holiday.

Currently, Gibraltar residents can cross their passports using a residence card without the need to seal. Spanish citizens can cross using government ID cards.

But there were concerns that it would end with the beginning European Union Entry/Exit System later this yearDue to heavy delays on the border.

Public opinion in Gibraltar, which according to the government has a population of 32,000, is in favor of possessing British sovereignty. In the most recent referendum held in 2002, around 99% of the voters were seen rejecting the proposal to share sovereignty with Spain.
