The 10 Best Twin Mattresses

The 10 Best Twin Mattresses

If you’re working with a twin-size bed frame, you’ll also need to choose the best twin mattress to give your space a total sleep upgrade. But that’s no easy decision; twin mattresses come in many different types, materials, and even lengths (such as longer twin XL models).

After testing dozens of mattresses, our favorite twin mattresses are hybrid options, thanks to their ability to provide balanced comfort and support. But we’ve also slept on innerspring, memory foam, and adjustable firmness models. We found that while brands do scale down some features on twin-sized mattresses, you can generally still find the same excellent support on these smaller options.

Whether you’re looking for a comfortable option that’ll suit a guest bedroom or an everyday twin mattress that’ll last for years of use, we’ve found the best picks for different sleepers, situations, and priorities.

When we first laid on the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress, we were blown away by its comfort. It’s inviting and oh-so-cushiony, but yet still supportive in its firmness. And after sleeping on this mattress for six months, it’s our favorite twin option.

If you want a plush, inviting sleep surface, this mattress delivers. Made with body-conforming memory foam, it feels like a cloud at first. But overnight, we find its support from the interior individually-wrapped coils stays consistent, supporting the lower back and keeping its feel consistent. To us, it felt like there was no break-in period.

We also love the standout edge support on this mattress. It’s made with high-density foam rails along the edges, so we had no issue finding a comfortable spot to sleep across its surface. And, as an added perk, every inch felt like new at the end of our testing period, with great durability.

We did test this Saatva mattress with the recommended foundation, which comes at an added cost ($225, at the time of this writing). While we liked the extra support that foundation provided, we aren’t sure it’s worth adding to a twin-sized mattress; we think it’d be just as great without adding more to the investment-level price of this pick.

Overall, though, this memory foam hybrid mattress wowed us, and we’re confident we’ll be sleeping on it for years to come. It manages to suit the needs of many sleepers all in one package, balancing support and comfort perfectly, in our opinion.

Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Twin Mattress

What We Like

  • Quick expansion to full size

  • Soft feel but firm support

  • Keeps body temperature neutral

Priced at under $250, quick to expand, and wonderfully firm, we love the Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress. After sleeping on it ourselves, we like this all-foam twin mattress for its medium-firm feel and all-around value. Plus, it includes added perks like charcoal to keep body temperature regulated and green tea to prevent any funky odors.

During testing, we were impressed by how quickly this memory foam mattress expanded to its full size. While the manufacturer recommends waiting 24 to 72 hours, we saw it expand far faster (and there was no offgassing odor). Even more importantly, though, it was comfortable from our first night of sleep.

We were initially surprised at just how firm this twin mattress felt, as we did expect the foam to feel plusher. However, over the course of our testing, we did find it improved our sleep. We think it manages to offer more support and firmness than other all-foam mattresses we’ve tested, but we do think it may be a little too firm for those who like that sink-in feel.

That firmness does pay off, though; we love how strong the edge support is here, and we find it doesn’t sag, sink, or change over time at all.

While we don’t love that this memory foam mattress lacks a trial period—something most other top twin mattresses offer—you can still return your purchase according to Amazon’s return policy.

Ultimately, with the impressive comfort and firmness it offers at its low price, we think it’s hard to top the value of this Zinus twin mattress. Plus, if you’re someone worried about the warmth of a foam mattress, this may be a solid option for better breathability and temperature regulation.

When is the best time to buy a twin mattress?

Twin mattresses, like all mattress sizes, typically go on sale at the end of season, specifically at the end of winter and the end of summer. So, odds are you’ll find the biggest discounts after Christmas and around Labor Day.

What We Like

  • Consistent, even firmness

  • Offers support for back and restless sleepers

  • No sagging or changes over time, even with multiple sleepers

Firm mattresses may not seem like the most inviting, since they naturally lack some plushness compared to medium and soft mattresses. But for certain sleepers, such as stomach sleepers or those who need extra support, a firm option like Nectar’s Classic Foam Mattress is the perfect choice.

After testing Nectar’s Classic model for ourselves, we agree that it’s a standout choice. We love its firmness, and we find it offers great support for those who need it. We had a number of testers try out this mattress, including a restless sleeper, an 11-year old, and two large dogs (though these unofficial pet testers didn’t weigh in with their thoughts!).

Overwhelmingly, our findings were that this firm mattress was consistent; it doesn’t sag, dip, or feel uneven across its surface.

That consistently firm support even extends to the edges of the mattress, and we never felt like we were slipping off or losing support whether sitting or laying down. Plus, over the course of our testing period, the mattress didn’t change in feel, suggesting it’s a durable pick with no break-in needed.

We do think that sleepers who want a plusher feel or more of a sink-in, body-enveloping softness will find this twin mattress too firm. Additionally, while the manufacturer touts this option as cooling, we have yet to notice any difference. We aren’t waking up hot, but we also don’t find it’s keeping us cooler at night.

The Purple PurpleFlex Mattress on a bed frame

What We Like

  • Supports the neck, shoulders, and back well

  • Breathable and allows for airflow

  • Suits side, back, and stomach sleepers

If you aren’t sure what kind of twin mattress might be best for you, we recommend the PurpleFlex Mattress. This unique hybrid option features foam and an innovative GelFlex grid, a combination that creates what we think is a pretty optimal balance of immediate comfort and support across the neck, shoulders, and back.

In testing, we slept on this mattress in every position and found it’s comfortable for every type of sleeper, though we best preferred it for side and stomach sleepers. It cradles key pressure points like the hips and shoulders, offering just enough softness to let these areas sink in softly. And for the hips and back, we felt like we were well-aligned.

We also like the breathability of this mattress. Our body temperature stays consistently comfortable at night, and we think it’s more breathable than other mattresses we’ve tried.

It’s worth noting, though, that the PurpleFlex Mattress is the thinnest option on our list. At just 8 inches thick, it’s a good 2 inches shorter than your average foam mattress—and this may affect how your favorite sheets fit the bed. While this mattress’s thinner profile doesn’t affect anything other than the fit of our sheets, some may find it a little too thin if they prefer more cushioning or have a larger bed frame.

Overall, though, thanks to its blend of softness and firmness, and how noticeably it improved our sleep during testing, we think this is a twin-sized option that’ll check the boxes for most sleepers.

The Signature Design by Ashley King Size Chime 12 Inch Medium Firm Memory Foam Mattress with Green Tea & Charcoal Gel for Pressure Relief on a bed frame

What We Like

  • Firm without feeling rigid

  • Firm without feeling rigid

  • Multiple thickness options

If you’re someone who’s prone to tossing, turning, and waking up in the middle of the night, the Signature Design by Ashley Chime Mattress may be just what you need. After sleeping on this mattress ourselves, we love it for restless sleepers who want to sleep soundly through the night.

Technically, this twin mattress is categorized as soft on the firmness scale, but we found it firmer than expected. We think this is a solidly medium-firm mattress, and we like how much support it offers. It does cradle pressure points, but our tester with back aches and pains did find it offered enough support to keep her sleeping comfortably.

We love how consistent the support of this mattress is, too. It’s not too rigid, but it has yet to sag, weaken, or “break in” in any way. It’s got great edge support too, so much so that we can utilize the full surface space without any concern for our comfort. And we weren’t woken up by discomfort or our pets wrestling on the mattress surface, either.

Our only real complaint about this mattress is it’s very stripped down. It doesn’t include any of the extra features found in most of the others we’ve tested, which means it offers no cooling or temperature-regulation capabilities; it doesn’t have standout edge support; and there’s no added support or pressure point cradling. So, if you need more from your mattress, this twin one may be a bit too simple.

The Bear Natural Mattress on a bed frame

Credit: The Spruce

What We Like

  • Quick, 6-minute expansion time

  • Supports side and back sleepers well

  • Made with breathable, organic, and natural materials

Those who prefer to choose bedding made with organic or natural materials will want to consider Bear’s Natural Mattress, our favorite organic twin mattress. We’re impressed at how quickly this mattress expanded during testing, reaching its full size in about 6 minutes, and at the support it offers. With strong edge support, lumbar support zones, and springy natural latex, it left us feeling well-supported on our back and side.

Technically, this entire mattress isn’t certified organic (that’s typically not possible since most are made with multiple materials, each of which needs to be certified separately), but it is made with a 100% organic cotton cover, includes CertiPUR-US certified layers, and carries a GREENGUARD Gold Certification.

The only potential drawback we’ve noticed on Bear’s Natural Mattress is it is quite a bit firmer than you might expect from a typical medium-firm mattress. It also has more bounce than sink-in softness. That’s because it’s a latex mattress; latex is naturally firmer than most foams and bounces back more, which can result in a slightly surprising feel if you’ve never slept on one of these mattresses before.

Overall, though, we think once you warm up and adapt to the feel of latex, this twin mattress is one that’ll keep you well-supported and resting easily thanks to the use of natural and organic materials.

Other Twin Mattresses We Recommend

In total, we’ve spent more than 3,600 hours testing mattresses, which means we have a few favorites (along with some other great options) that didn’t quite make our list of the best twin options. We slept on a few that didn’t quite measure up, but we think they may still make worthy picks for certain sleepers.

While these mattresses delivered a comfy night’s sleep for us, we think they include bells and whistles most twin-sized mattresses don’t need. A number of them also come at a higher cost because of those extra comfort-enhancing features you might not need compared to the other picks on this list.

We think they’re worthy investments if you’re going to use your twin mattress frequently—or if you have unique needs that require extra support or comfort. But they did fall just slightly short of the other picks on our list above.

Final Verdict

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress is our pick for the overall best twin mattress, thanks to its versatile comfort and support. During testing, we found this option suits sleepers of every position and style, with a balanced construction to deliver a comfortable night’s sleep across the board. We also like the Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress, our best budget pick thanks to its under-$250 price and impressive firmness and whole-body support.

How We Tested the Twin Mattresses

We’ve spent the last three years testing mattresses of all types, including twin mattresses made with innersprings, memory foam, and even latex in The Lab and at home. We’ve researched mattresses from popular brands and retailers, then assessed how they hold up to everyday use over the course one, three, and six months—or even longer, in some cases.

As we test twin mattresses, we consider:

  • Setup and delivery, including the costs associated with delivery, how simple it is, and if our old mattress was disposed of.
  • The initial comfort of the mattress, noting whether there’s any break-in period and how well we sleep from the very first night.
  • Support for different sleepers as we tossed, turned, and tried sleeping on our backs, stomachs, and sides.
  • Temperature regulation where applicable for mattresses that claimed to cool hot sleepers.
  • Long-term comfort and support as we continued to use the mattress normally for weeks and months.

We also considered the different details of each mattress during testing, noting edge support, how materials morphed (or stayed consistent) after months of use, and if the mattress suited different use cases over time.

How to Choose a Twin Mattress

Which Type of Twin Mattress is Best?

After testing dozens of different types of mattresses, we overwhelmingly prefer hybrid mattresses here at The Spruce. Hybrid mattresses are popular today (most brands offer at least one hybrid model) because they blend the cushiony comfort of foam mattresses with the more durable support of innerspring mattresses.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that a hybrid twin mattress is best for every sleeper. In fact, in our testing, we’ve learned that choosing your mattress type is a highly personal decision. Your sleep position and style will ultimately determine which mattress type and materials are the best, most supportive choice.

So, before you decide which is the best twin mattress for your needs, ask yourself:

  • Do you sleep on your side, back, or stomach?
  • Are you a combination sleeper who changes positions?
  • Do you toss and turn or experience restless sleep?
  • Are you a warm or hot sleeper who often wakes up sweaty?
  • Do you have any particular needs, like extra support, more firmness, or increased hip support?

Once you answer these questions, you’ll have a better idea what type of twin mattress is the right fit. For example, if you’re a stomach sleeper, a firm mattress like Nectar’s Classic Foam Mattress (our best firm twin mattress) or a hybrid model with innersprings like Saatva’s Classic Luxury Firm Mattress (another twin option we like) will be a great choice.

Back and side sleepers, on the other hand, may find options like the Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress (our best budget twin mattress) or the PurpleFlex Mattress (our most versatile pick) offer more of a soft yet supportive feel for all-night alignment.

Then, Think About Firmness

Once you’ve settled on the type of twin mattress that’s best for you, you’ll want to consider firmness. Mattresses typically come in three firmness levels:

  • Soft, which offers the most sink-in when laying on top
  • Medium, which strikes a middle ground between soft and firm
  • Firm, which is the hardest option with the least sink-in feel

Mattress firmness is ranked on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. Soft mattresses tend to fall between 1 to 3, while medium mattresses rank around 4 to 6. Firm mattresses sit at 7 to 9, and extra-firm models (which are the firmest and also least common option) sit at a 10.

Most of the twin mattresses we’ve tested and love fall into the medium or medium-firm category, including the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress (our overall best pick). However, if you’re looking for a softer model, the Signature Design by Ashley Chime 12 Inch Medium Firm Memory Foam Mattress is the softest of the twin mattresses we tested. If you’re looking for something firm, Nectar’s Classic Foam Mattress is our favorite twin-size option.

Don’t Overlook the Details

In addition to considering the overall layers, materials, and makeup of any twin mattress, we also recommend digging into the details. While some mattresses are made pretty simply, like all-foam models (we like the Signature Design by Ashley King Size Chime 12 Inch Medium Firm Memory Foam Mattress, our best choice for restless sleepers), other twin models come with the same features you’d find on full, queen, and king sized mattresses.

Often, twin mattresses feature scaled-down versions of what’s available on larger mattresses. That means these smaller, narrower mattresses can feature layers of temperature-regulating materials like charcoal or cooling gel, or even have airflow channels built in. They can also be made with cool-to-the-touch fabrics and threads, like you’d find in the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Mattress.

Edge support in particular is one of the most critical details on a twin mattress. Because twin mattresses are the narrowest option on the market (aside from crib or toddler mattresses), odds are whoever’s sleeping on the mattress is likely to wind up close to the edges. A lack of edge support can lead to a sagging, sloped feel that can interrupt sleep and interfere with support.

Depending on your preferences, you may want extras like added cushioning in the form of a pillow top (which can be found on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Cooling Luxe) or targeted support like in the Bear Natural Mattress (our best organic twin mattress).
