This Vivo X Fold 5 feature can be the best way to multitak on a foldable

TL; Dr.

  • Vivo’s upcoming X Fold 5 has a new multitasking system, called the “nuclear workpiece”, which is capable of running up to five active apps simultaneously.
  • “Atomic Workbench” enables a major app view, but the open canvas approach of Live, OnePlus, which is accompanied by a better layout to confuse more apps.
  • Vivo X Fold 5 launched in China on 25 June.

OnePlus leads Open canvas Features with OnePlus Open Foldable, users are allowed to open three apps simultaneously on their foldable inner display. This approach stood as one of the best ways to multitak on Android foldables and tablets, as it opened two apps from each other, tucking away with the third app but ready to stay in any moment. Now, Vivo’s upcoming X fold 5 foldable threatened to incite the multitasking crown of Ekplas with its “nuclear work area” feature.

Product Manager of Vivo Han Boxiao A demo of the multitasking system of the X Fold 5 is shared, called “原子工作台”, which translates into a “nuclear workpiece”.

The demo video shows that the honor of the Kings game occupies most of the screen real estate, but not all. There is empty space on the sides, but more especially, we see four apps hanging in the top ~ 30% of the screen. By tapping any of these apps, they are brought to attention in a similar layout. However, apps such as Deepsek and WPS spreadsheets push multitasking pane to the left (perhaps because they open in portrait orientation). We also present a drag handle on the bottom right corner, although the demo does not display its use.

This multitasking solution is talented as it allows an app to dominate the display, while still gives you a good glimpse of what other apps are doing. The cherry at the top is that all five apps continue to actively walk even when they are out of the focus. For all practical purposes, apps still focus too much. We can see that the honor of the Kings is moving forward with the gameplay, and the lamp keeps responding to the query even when switching to the user.

Essentially, Vivo has improved the experience of the Open Canvas of OnePlus, which is focusing more on an app keeping the rest open in a small, switchable window. Layout is also improved by traditional multi-window experience of Android, which recently adopted 90:10 Multitasking Split After being inspired by an open canvas on the Candibar phone. However, I cannot help keep similarities with the stage manager of iPados, which focuses on the app groups, while the multitasking implementation of Vivo focuses on individual apps.

It remains to be seen how easy it is to activate this multitasking layout, if it can run with less than five apps, and if users can change the shape of the layout or prepare again.
