Know before you buy: starting today, EU’s new labels shake up the smartphone market

From today, all new smartphones and tablets sold in the European Union require an energy efficiency label inside their packaging. In-box stickers are similar to those shown on other consumer electronic devices sold in the European Union/EEA market. The main goal of new regulation is to help the European Union consumers to make an option to purchase informing and reduce the co₂ emissions.

The regulation is applied to all cordless phones (landline), smartphones used on cellular or satellite networks, internet connections or phones without a third party app, and tablet with screen between 7 and 17.4 inches.

Energy stickers, as commonly known, feature a rating on the scale of G to G, with the most efficient and G is at least efficient. This displays seven pieces of information:

  • Overall energy efficiency class rating (from A to G).
  • Battery endurance per cycle (in hours and minutes) charge per full battery
  • Repeatedly free fall reliability class (from A to E).
  • Battery endurance in cycles.
  • Repair class (from A to E).
  • Ingress protection rating.

Smartphones and tablets to get a new label in June indicate battery life and efficiency

Manufacturers will need to register their products European Product Registry for Energy Labeling (EPREL) Which is managed by the European Commission.

In addition, all new equipment sold in the European Union will have to meet five eco-design norms:

  • Tolerance: The equipment should be resistant to casual drops and preserved against dust and water.
  • Battery longevity: The battery should tolerate at least 800 full charge and discharge cycles, while at least 80% of their original capacity remains.
  • Repair: Manufacturers should provide important spare parts within 5 to 10 working days, and continue to present the product for 7 years after they are not sold in the European Union.
  • Software support: The device should receive the operating system upgrade for at least 5 years from the date of end-off-cell.

We want to indicate that the new battery endurance rating aspect is actually connected to us many closely. Battery life test And the French automation company uses software from the smartwear, which now provides the same test solution to the device manufacturers.
