Kolkata: Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar told Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday that he was to initiate parliamentary privilege proceedings by the ruling Trinamool Congress of West Bengal during a visit to South 24 Parganas district.
The BJP chief of West Bengal went to the Budge Buse in South 24 Parganas on Thursday when some people protested to meet an injured party worker, demanded unpaid wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme and threw slippers on their convoys and shouted slogans against them.
In his letter, Belurghat MP and BJP Bengal unit president Majumdar said, “On June 19, when I was visiting Diamond Harbor to meet the victims of political violence and assessing the law-order situation in the area, my official convoy had involved those who worked with Jarai.
“I present that this incident is for the House’s privilege and serious violation of contempt and requests you to take cognizance of the matter and refer to the committee of privileges for appropriate examination and action,” he said.
Majumdar also alleged that the police was standing as a silent spectator. He wrote on X: “The police failed not only to work during the violence – they also failed to take any preventive action, despite the clear signs of increasing tension.”
Rahul Goswami, Superintendent of Police (SP), Diamond Harbor Police District refused to comment on the incident.
The Central Government’s Center for suspending 60% of the Center of MGNREGA funds has been a major political issue in West Bengal since 2022. On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court directed the Center to resume MGNREGA from 1 August.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said that the Center had stopped the wages of poor people who worked under the MGNREGA scheme. Ghosh said, “It is clear that they were angry. When people protested, Majumdar branded women as ‘jihadis’. He should publicly apologize for his statements,” Ghosh said.
TMC shared a video clip on social media, in which Majumdar can be heard saying that the protesters in Budge Badge were “Jihadis”.
