Fric Potgiator and Peter Haxm returns from prison in Equatorial Guinea to South Africa

Two South African engineers have returned home after spending more than two years of prison in Equatorial Guinea, which the United Nations has called for allegations of “arbitrary and illegal” drugs.

Both the frick potgiator and Peter Haxum arrested in their mid -50s, after alleged drugs found in their belongings in February 2023.

He was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined $ 5m (£ 4m), but was forgiven the presidential post after a long campaign by his families and South African government.

His arrest was seized in South Africa following a luxury property related to Equatorial Guinea Vice President Teodoro Gugaima Obiang.

A boat related to Obiang and two Cape Town Villas, who are also the son of the chairman of Equatorial Guinea, were engaged in the execution of the court’s decision.

According to a statement issued by the families of two men, “We are overwhelmed by relief and happiness. The last two years and four months are unimaginably painful for both our families.”

He was working for Dutch Oil and Gas Company SBM at Equatorial Guinea, when he was arrested at night, before he was due to returning home after a five -week term in the country.

The families had called for the help of the UK government along with the South African government, as Sri Huxom has dual nationality.

“South Africa expressed his honesty for the government of Equatorial Guinea and eventually approved this presidential post for this presidential, which allowed Mr. Haxm and Mr. Potgiator to return home to their loved ones,” A post on X by South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola,

The United Nations Working Group called for the release of the pair on arbitrariness last year, saying their custody was illegal.

Their families say the pair was arrested in vengeance for the seizure of assets related to the vice president of Equatorial Guinea.

The BBC has approached Equatorial Guinea for comments.

A South African official told the BBC that it was to decide the fate of the boat and Villa for the courts, and the government could not intervene.
