Free Lifetime State Parks Pass: New Mexico Honors Veterans

The purpose of offering the latest State Park of New Mexico is to honor those who served our country, with free access to life. Since July 1, 2025, veterans residents of New Mexico can apply for this lifetime pass and will never have to pay for day-use entry or camping access in any state park in the land of enchantment.

Governor Mitchell Lujan Grisham signed the House Bill 161 on 20 March 2025 to provide recreational opportunities and access to veterans from New Mexico. According to a press release, the Bill received strong bilateral support in the legislature. That bill opened the door to make this new lifetime pass.

“Our State Park System represents some of the most beautiful and valuable lands in New Mexico,” Melani A., Secretary for the Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources (EMNRD). Kandardine said. Press release“We are honored to open these places for men and women who have served our nation.”

EMNRD public information officer Sydney Hill told Gearjanki that the benefit would only provide access to 35 state parks in New Mexico and will not include state monuments. It is also available only to non-active duty military giants.

Governor Gishum said in a press release, “This lifetime passes our veterans access to some most beautiful places in our state – places where they can find peace, can connect with nature, and enjoy the external entertainment that makes New Mexico home.”

How to eligibility and apply

According to Hill, “To qualify for a pass, a person must be a verified military experienced and a new Mexico resident.”

Hill said that both the conditions would be verified when an experienced New Mexico Department of Veterans Services would be verified.

Secretary Kendardine said that “Giving giants a chance to enjoy our parks and campground is a meaningful way to say thanks, and we are ready to honor the lifetime veterans in the parks.”
