The Indian women’s football team on Saturday defeated Thailand 2–1 on the 700th anniversary of the Chiang My Stadium to book their place in AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026. Sangita Basfore netted a brace.
India made history by winning the qualifier to book its place for the first time in its history.
India had never reached the AFC Women’s Asian Cup through a qualifier before. Blue Tigress last participated in the top tournament of the continent in 2003 when there was no qualifier. India participated in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 as a host, but had to withdraw due to Kovid outbreak in the squad.
“I want to congratulate my team first. It’s because of them that I am able to score these two goals. A great thanks to the coaching staff,” Sangita was said after all the time.
He said, “Our goal is the World Cup. We will see moving forward. I want to thank fans and our families for supporting us too.”
How did India make history?
In the game, Thailand was ranked 46th in 24th from India, both were equal in qualifiers. Blue Tigress won innocent, defeated Mongolia 13–0, Timor Laste 4–0 and Iraq 5–0. Similarly, Chabakav conquered the same opponents with a score of 11-0, 4-0 and 7-0 respectively. Both teams now have a target difference, which establishes a adjacent knockout clash.
