The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (Mohua) has demanded that Lutyens’ Bungalow No. 5 on Krishna Menon Marg in Delhi – The residence for the seated CJI of India, should be evacuated immediately according to a Supreme Court communication viewed by HT.
Justice Chandrachud Retired on 10 November 2024. According to government rules, a serving Chief Justice deserves type VIII bungalow during his tenure. After retirement, he may remain fare-free for a period of six months in a type of VII government bungalow.
In this example, Justice Chandrachud continued to stay in the type VIII bungalow allocated as Chief Justice for about eight months after retiring. This was possible because his successor – former CJI Sanjeev Khanna and the current CJI Br Gavai – opted not to capture 5, Krishna Menon Marg residence and remained in their existing official homes.
Justice Chandrachud said that individual circumstances were delayed and the Supreme Court administration was informed about this. He told NDTV that he did not want to do overseas in government residence. “But my daughters need a house with special needs. I have been walking since February. I have also tried to do service apartments and hotels, but none of them have worked,” he said.
