Chandigarh, June 10 (PTI) The Punjab government on Tuesday signed an MoU with the Christian Medical College (CMC) of Ludhiana to establish the state’s first bone marrow transplant (BMT) facility in the public sector.

Its purpose is to start a life -saving initiative for children suffering from Thalassemia and find a permanent solution.

The MoU was received by Health Minister Dr. The presence of Balbir Singh was signed, who appreciated the associate spirit of this initiative and confirmed the government’s commitment to make advanced healthcare accessible and inexpensive for all.

Under this program, eligible patients – especially children under 12 years of age will be provided free HLA (human leukocyte antigen) typing and subsidized alogenic stem cell (bone marrow) transplant, which is currently the only therapeutic treatment for Thalassemia. Once successfully treated, these children no longer require lifelong blood transfusions.

An official statement said that no government medical college in Punjab has an operational BMT facility, which forces patients, especially to take expensive treatment outside the state with thalassemia, blood cancer and other hematologic disorders.

This partnership with CMC Ludhiana, a major institute with perfect expertise in BMT, is to bring that difference and bring about remedial treatment within the reach of economically weaker patients.

The BMT Center will provide close to close treatment to the house, especially benefiting patients from rural and underestmented districts.

Local availability of follow -up care within the state system will improve better monitoring and results.

In addition, the Center will also serve as a training and skill development center, expecting transplanting ecosystems in Punjab and expected to increase uptake from local access and reduce dropouts.

The Health Minister said, “This is a historic step towards justified healthcare in Punjab. Through this partnership, we are not just making a facility, we are giving new hope to hundreds of families who are struggling with life-threatening diseases.” This facility is expected to be commissioned in the near future to ensure transparent, need-based patient care with strong coordination between the Health Department, CMC Ludhiana and other stakeholders.
