The Attorney General has said that two-level justice in the UK is “disgusting” and “wrong”.
In his first major interview, Lord Hermer told the BBC that politicians needed to think about “dangers” using the phrase they were presenting for the “essential institutions” of the UK.
Lord Hermer, who is the Chief Legal Advisor to the government, also said that he was “unbreakable” from criticism of his work as a barrister before entering politics.
It is alleged that the UK conducts a two-tier justice system after riots in the summer of 2024, some argued that the rioters were treated hard by the police and the courts.
In an interview for a BBC radio 4 documentary, Stamor’s stormy yearLord Hermer said: “What some people wanted to do, brought up ‘Two -tier’, in such a way that people were being treated to try to kill police officers – and I wanted to repeat it, kill police officers – with a reaction to protests on the London streets.
“You can consider whether they are correctly opposed or wrong, but they were not producing violence that you can also start legitimately [during] riots.
“This is where two-level comes from.”
He rejected the label, and said it was “clearly disgusting” to compare between police officers, who were trying to protect themselves and communities and protests or demonstrations.
“I think it is aggressive to our police. It is aggressive to our Crown Prosecutors who are trying to implement the law in the best belief. It is aggressive to the courts, where independent judges are implementing the law to reach the correct sentences.
“We don’t have two-level justice system. We have a justice system, it is an independent justice system … and I think we all need to go behind it, not looking to reduce it.”

“You can’t say because you don’t like someone’s politics. If you do this, the whole justice system is separated. It is really important. So at a kind of political level, I am uncontrolled by attacks on it.”
He said: “Clearly, it tickles most of my family and friends that I am being depicted as some huge laftty, because I am not what I am. I am progressive, and I am deeply practical in my politics.”
