One of the two charismatic criminals involved in the kidnapping, who gave the world the word “Stockholm syndrome”, died at the age of 78, his family has said.

Clarke Oloffson – who arose for global notorious after a kidnapping and bank robbery in the Swedish capital in 1973 – died after a prolonged illness, his family told the online media outlet dagance etc.

During the six-day siege, Olofeson’s hostages began to sympathize with him and his partner, defending their actions more hostile to the police outside.

This phenomenon gives its name to a principle psychological status from which kidnapping victims develop affection for their prisoners.

The notorious bank siege was instigated by another person, Jan-Arich Olson. After three women and a man hostage, they demanded Olofason – whom they had previously befriended in jail – they were brought from jail to the bank.

Swedish officials agreed to their demand, and Olofeson entered the bank, which was surrounded by police.

Years later, in an interview with the Aftonbladet newspaper, he claimed that he was asked to work as an inner person to secure a prisoner in exchange for low punishment, but the authorities were accused that they were not respecting the agreement.

Experts have argued whether the Stockholm syndrome is a real psychiatric situation, with some debate it is a defense mechanism to deal with painful situations.

The term was followed by a siege by Swedish criminologist and psychiatrist Nills Bezerot, which appears to some detainees felt for their hostage.
