Danish women are now being called for 11 months of military service when they turned 18, after a change in law.

Under the new rules passed by the Parliament of Denmark, women have to join adolescent men in a lottery system, which may require a period.

Till now, women were allowed to participate in military service when they turned 18, but on voluntary basis.

From Tuesday, both men and women aged 18 will have to register to evaluate for potential military service. With the remaining numbers made through the lottery system, volunteers will be admitted first.

Changes will also increase for adolescents from four months to 11 months.

About 4,700 Danish men and women of a short period of military service in 2024 – about 24% of them were female volunteers. The new rules on conference are expected to increase military service by 2033 annually by 6,500.

Colonel Kenneth Strome, head of the conference program of Danish Military, said the change was “based on a political decision and a political agreement made by the parties”.

He said: “And of course, it is based on the current security position to gain more combat power and is the skills that are required for the army, navy, air force or even special operation forces.”

Talking to the current volunteer, The Reuters News Agency in the Denmark army, said: “We are more in the world situation, it is necessary that there are more conferences, and I think women should contribute equally, as men do.

“I think this is a positive change.”
