Portland, ore.-Twenty-seven states and Colombia district on Monday filed a case in the bankruptcy court, seeking to block the sales of personal genetic data by 23andme without customer consent. The lawsuit has come as a biotechnology company, which seeks court approval to buy a struggling firm.

Oregon’s Attorney General Dan Refield said in a news release about the trial that biological samples, DNA data, health symptoms and medical records are very sensitive to each individual to be sold without express. Customers should have the right to control such deep personal information and cannot be sold like ordinary assets, it said.

23andme customers use salivary-based DNA test kits to learn about their offspring and find losely lost relatives. Established in 2006, the company also performed health research and drug development. But it struggled to find a profitable business model since it became public in 2021. In March, it placed 40% of its employees and filed chapter 11 in the eastern district of Missouri for insolvency conservation, raising concerns about the safety of customer data.

Regenron Pharmaceuticals said that last month it was aimed at purchasing the company for $ 256 million. Regenronon said that it would comply with 23andme secrecy policies and the applied law. It said that all these customers will apply personal data to the current in consent, privacy policies and statements, terms, and notices and are in accordance with the safety controls designed to protect such data.

Appointed by a court, the independent consumer privacy Lokpal was due to investigating the proposed sale and how it can affect the report to the consumer secrecy and the court by Tuesday.
