Patna, Bihar: Friday was recorded in golden letters in the history of Indian democracy, today the country saw the beginning of voting through mobile for the first time. This unique initiative has been taken by the State Election Commission, Bihar, which has taken an important step towards making the election process more easy and modern. Vibha Kumari, a resident of ward number 8 of Pakdayal of East Champaran, became the first voter to do so, she gained the distinction of being the country’s first e-voter by casting her vote through mobile.
This step of Vibha Kumari has proved to be a milestone not only for her but for the whole country. Voting using mobiles shows a big leap towards digitization of the electoral process in India. Similarly, Munna Kumar, the voter of ward number 1 of Pakdayal, became the first male voter in the country to vote through e-voting. The names of these two persons have now been recorded on the golden pages of history.
People living outside will be easy
The usefulness and access of this e-voting system can be gauged from the fact that in the municipal elections, Indian voters from distant countries like Dubai and Qatar also used themselves through mobile. It is a clear indication that this initiative can prove to be a boon for millions of Indian citizens who stay away from their homes for work or other reasons and traditionally feel difficulty in voting. This will make voting extremely easy for the diaspora and people going from one place to another in connection with work within the country.
Voting percentage will increase
The State Election Commission has not only shown technical progress by executing this ‘unique initiative’, but has also outlined its commitment to strengthen democratic participation. Providing voting facility through mobile, especially at a time when digital literacy is increasing, is a visionary step. This facility enables voters to cast votes from anywhere without any physical obstruction, which is likely to increase voting percentage.
