AIMIM leader Waris Pathan criticized the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for suddenly cancelling permission for animal sacrifices in the housing societies just before Eid al-Adha.
Pathan said that, like every year, the BMC had done surveys in different societies and given written approval where allowed. Based on that, many people brought goats to their buildings in preparation for the festival.
He said, “Earlier BMC issued a circular after conducting a survey in societies, just like every year, stating that if a society has permission, they can proceed. On the basis of this permission, many people brought goats and kept them in their societies for Eid, which is tomorrow. But now, BMC has suddenly issued another circular saying that these societies cannot conduct animal sacrifice. Isn’t this wrong?…”

He also said that while people should follow rules and respect the law, it’s also the government’s job to make sure festivals are celebrated peacefully and with unity.
“We live in a secular country and believe in democracy. Our Constitution gives us the right to practice our religion freely,” he said. “The government must ensure that everyone feels safe and respected during their festivals.”

Some People Are Spreading Hate
Pathan claimed that even though the BMC had already granted permission in many places, some people went to the officials and pressured them to cancel it. “Every year, sacrifices happen in societies after the BMC gives the go-ahead. This time too, they gave permission. But now, some people who want to create a division are going to BMC officers and forcing them to cancel it,” he said.
What Will People Do With Their Goats Now?
Pathan raised concerns about what people are supposed to do now, after bringing goats home with proper permission. “Isn’t this wrong? When we call BMC, they say they are under pressure from higher authorities. Now tell me, where will the man take his goat? He brought it after getting permission. The government needs to take action and fix this,” he added.

Will They Say Don’t Eat Chicken Next?
He also warned that this kind of behavior could go too far. “Today, they are saying don’t sacrifice goats. Tomorrow, they’ll say don’t eat chicken, and the day after, don’t eat fish. Nitesh Rane, who is spreading this hate, is the Minister of Fisheries and Ports—will the government shut down that department too? Everyone has the right to choose what they eat. That’s a right given by the Constitution, and no one can take that away,” Pathan said.
