I like to set great goals: I run faster than before, travel farthest that I have ever been from home, scale the highest mountain in Lower 48. There is something about doing something that you have never done before, and strong, more experienced, sensible. When you are in that unknown area, however, you are bound to learn some difficult lessons. I did a good job for my own growth on Mount Whitney, but there were still a handful of things that I do differently.

Mount Whitney attracts the attention of all types of hikers from ambitious novice to Evid Peakbagger. Because this mark does not require any technical training or gear, the biggest barrier for entry is permit (and perhaps height). It is being said that in about 2 10 Mount Whitney Hikers allegedly faced issues altitude sickness Or turn around before exhaustion and peak.

During the peak season, there is always a wide range of experience on the trail at a certain time. Last year, two hikers who tried to hold the summit 150 pound gear Plus Five gallons of waterHowever, he did not make it far away. Subsequently, Ryan Hutter, a mountain guide in the region, told me that he saw Mount Whitney Hikers duct tape in the case of beer outside his pack. Last September on my own journey, where I had to do Help a seriously tired man under the mountain When his hiking partner left him.

Sure, they are extremes. But even within a “normal” growth, it is easy to find a lot of things that you change if you increase it again. I belong to me here.

The way you think you will need

Generally, Mount Whitney Hychers will plan for a alpine start – sometimes as before midnight. In general, when traveling hiking on this high mountains, you want to see the cloud cover and stay away from the peak before a possible afternoon storms.

When I planned Mount Whitney’s day, I calculated my early times, when I expected to grow in mind keeping in mind the normal snack brake. We started before 4 in the morning as we took enough training to move forward quickly at the height. However, we were final to make it at the summit that day.

On the increase of my training, I was mostly on this step, stopping only for the pictures of the peak. This is because I did not find the trails of my neighborhood, which I have logged at a distance of miles throughout my life, it is notable. This mountain, however, is different. During the hike, my partner and I were moving on a medium clip, but when we used to stop to take a picture or enjoy the scene, it meant that we did not give the summit till 2 pm

I found it difficult to come to power through various stages of hike without stopping. Every time I made a turn, this scene was better than the last, and I was waiting for my whole life to see it. Somewhere, the whole day got away from us. We were lucky that there was no storm in that afternoon.

Bring less water

Obviously, this piece of advice comes with some caves. Being from the desert, where the water sources start drying up and dry the whole year, I was not sure how reliable lakes and streams would be in September. In the handc set up, I wasted my time and energy not only by calling the ranger station for status updates. I packed for a dry growth and brought all the water required for that day. But on the way, it seems that endless, running streams made fun of every weighted, waterfall step.

Caves come here: To read the most accurate on current water source situations, call a ranger station before your hike. These are experts, people who are out of there daily and can provide reliable information in real time. In addition, there is a lot of water on the scar, but only until you reach the trail camp and 97 switchbacks. From there, there are not much water sources for the summit. The trail camp is a good place to fill the water before making that last push.

Prepare for mental sucking that is trail crest

Talking about the famous switchback: Everyone who refers to that section should be the trail crest amnesia as the most difficult part of the trail. I think a part of mine died a little on that screen stretch on the summit.

At an altitude of 13,645 feet, Trail Crest is the highest mountain pass here in the US, you increase the shade behind Mount Muir and Mount Whitney, and on the other side of you, the mountain falls dramatically, offering scenes in the guitar lake and Seawia National Park. Sure, it is very beautiful. But this is definitely a piece. The trail is another 2.8 miles from Crest to Shikhar. In that distance, the scar is out for a few minutes, which seemed like a relief after mile and mile at that time. Finally, however, it only meant that the remaining miles were stable, more incredible.

From this section, you can clearly see the hut at the top of Mount Whitney, essentially the finish line. But, as I extended it, it seemed that it was getting away and away. The switchbacks leading to the summit were so long that I felt as if I was spending hours on each one. I found this section mentally and physically, much harder than any other part of the mark,

Bring additional battery

Sometimes the most valuable gear is the most basic. Most people increase the sun for hours before the sun rises, and many people increase after hours of the sun. I forgot to pack the spare battery, and I was squinting through a single lumen until the end of the hike. Even though the footpath is very well marked, in full darkness, there were some parts where it was difficult to differentiate between a rock edge and a tree. Our desire to stay on the footpath and not to print from the mountain slowed us a little after sunset. To make things more difficult: My growth was during a new moon, so it was as dark as it becomes. Make sure your torch is firing as bright as possible by stashing a pair of spare battery or power pack to up your rechargeable.

Backpack

When I applied for a permit, I tried for both Dehiking and Backpacking, which was ready to do anything Entertainment. gov The gods thought it appropriate. I dayhiked it, but next time, I will only consider backpacking. It seemed that all backpackers were more fun than the Dehikars. Perhaps this is because they were able to spend more time than us more than us, maybe they were able to sleep, or because they only needed to take a winging day to take a winged day to tag the peak and could leave their gear in the campsite.

All the Dehakers and I were on a time-rage mission to hit the climax throughout the day. I think if I was able to take it without any time limit, I will like the experience too much. Mount Whitney is a hike people who dream of doing their entire life. Many trips are far away: we met the people of Japan, many countries of Europe and people from all over the country. How lucky we were to get a prestigious permit and increase this footpath. Why do it quickly?

There were some things that I met before and after my dehaiq:

  • Reach a few days ago and increase a couple convergence. The departure of 14,500 feet above sea level is much difficult than going from 10,000 feet to 14,500 feet above sea level.
  • Khadi trails, long trails, trains on high altitude trails, whatever I could take to the increase in months. On these hikes, I tested snacks and gear, so I knew what the work would work on the big day. (Strength training helped a lot.)
  • I aimed for a working day permit. If you choose non-week, non-halide dates, then your possibility of scoring permits is more. Our growth was on Tuesday, and during the permit application process, I chose Tuesday and Wednesday in September and October as they are less popular days and months.
