Former Zambia President died at the age of 68

Former Jambia President Edgar Lungu died at the age of 68, his party said in a statement.

He said for an unknown disease “receiving special treatment in South Africa”, the patriotic front said.

Lungu led Zambia for six years from 2015, losing the 2021 election by the current President Hakenade Hichilima by a huge margin.

After that defeat, he stepped back from politics, but later returned to the field and showed ambitions to re -run for the presidency.

In a video statement, Lungu’s daughter Tasila said that the former head of the state, who was “under medical supervision in recent weeks”, died on Thursday at 06:00 (04:00 GMT).

“At this moment of grief, we invite the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ – the Kaalit Panth that directed President Lungu to the service of our country,” he said.
