Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who served as the leader of the South African nation since 2015-2021, his daughter died on Thursday, his daughter said. He was 68 years old. Lungu’s daughter Tasila Lungu-Mansa announced her death in a video posted on the official Facebook page of her political party, The Patriotic Front. He said that he died in a hospital in South Africa after being under “medical supervision” in recent weeks. Lungu-Mansa, who is a legalist, did not say the cause of death. Langu became President in 2015 to complete the term of Michael Sata in 2015. Lungu was elected to a full presidential post in 2016, defeating the current Zambian President Hakenade Hichilima. Lungu later lost to Hichilima in the 2021 election. Lungu had demanded challenging Hichilima in the next year’s presidential election, but last year a court stopped her from standing. The court gave its time verdict as President from 2015-2016, which was counted as a full tenure and said he had a maximum length of two conditions. Lungu alleged that there was political intervention in the court’s decision. His wife and other family members have faced allegations of corruption. Lungu claimed last year that his movements were being monitored by the police and he was effectively placed under the arrest of the house to restrict his return to politics. Police said that monitoring former presidents for their safety was the standard.
