The government feared that the victims of the post office scams who had not yet demanded compensation would feel “disturbed” if the authorities chased them to apply, they have been told to MPs.

The MPs’ Public Account Committee (PAC), which has been paid, found that many of the accused or convicted sub-posters were not yet received “fair and time”.

In a report, he said that the government had taken “insufficient action” to ensure that people entitled to compensation had applied for it.

The Department of Trade and Trade (DBT) said that it had paid £ 1BN in compensation.

The committee revealed that the government had no current plan to follow the eligible people for compensation, received a response only after one of the five letters sent to the sub-posts about the restoration.

The MPs said that they were “worried about the ability to further delays if the letter which had not yet received the answer was not being followed”.

Chris Head, who runs a post office in West Bolden, South Tincide, said the current compensation processes were not working.

Mr. Head, who was made an OBE for justice services last year, was incorrectly accused of stealing £ 88,000 and when a criminal investigation was removed against him, the post office later launched a civil case.

DBT said that it was “worried that the people receiving the letter feel upset if they have a series of letters asking the same thing”.

However, DBT agreed to consult the horizon compensation advisory board on this suggestion that follow -up letters should be sent to the applicants who have not yet applied for prevention.

Between 1999 and 2015, over 900 sub-postmasters were incorrectly prosecuted after the faulty horizon, making it feeling that it seemed that the money was missing from the branch accounts.

Some sub-postmasters finished going to jail, while many more financially ruined and lost their livelihood. Some died while waiting for justice.

The scam has been described as the largest abortion of justice in British legal history, but many victims are still waiting for financial prevention, despite the government pledged to speed up payment.

The Department of Trade and Trade said that the PAC report was based on “period before last year’s election”.

However, the committee stated that while the report examined the annual accounts for the department for trade and trade from April 2023 to March 2024, while the orthodoxy was in power, the report also reflected the current government’s record.

The report includes evidence recited in April this year and some recent figures as May have been reflected.

The committee said:

The PAC report states that the government had “no plans to follow with those who are eligible to claim under the schemes, but who have not yet applied”.

It said that the government has not yet clarified the value of the required claims through HSS and HCRS schemes.

The latest data showed that the total £ 1.039bn has been awarded more than 7,300 sub-posters in all prevention schemes.

Committee chairman Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said that it was “deep unsatisfactory” that compensation plans were still moving very slowly, with no government plans to track the majority of potential claimants, who do not yet know about their proper rights “.

He said, “It is completely unacceptable that people affected by this scam, some of whom have been forced to protect them from their cases, are being forced to protect their names,” he said.

The committee has made several recommendations to the government with a comprehensive message that each postmaster is fully aware of the options to claim compensation.

The trade department said: “We will consider recommendations and work with the post office, who have already written to more than 24,000 postmasters, to ensure that everyone who can be eligible for prevention is given an opportunity to apply for it.”

The long-running public inquiry into the post office scam, which has investigated the treatment of thousands of sub-postmasters and demanded to establish who was convicted for the wrong prosecutions, publishing its final report on 8 July.

No encouragement to recover fraud covid loan

As part of its annual report, which was compiled in April this year, but covers the period from April 2023 to March 2024, the PAC also found that the government’s efforts to recover the loss of fraud through the bounce back loan scheme introduced to help recover from the covid-inspired damage were also “largely unusual”.

It was stated that it was estimated that at least £ 1.9BN was lost for fraud, in payment of only £ 130M from the lenders charged, although it is unconfirmed as to what the amount related to the fraud is.

The report said that the government was “very passive with primary responsibility on lenders to recover loss”.

“As the losses of lenders are reduced by 100% by the government, there is no commercial incentive to assist taxpayers in recovery of money,” he said.
