HDMI 2.2 spec released with 96Gbps bandwidth and 16K support

HDMI 2.2 spec released with 96Gbps bandwidth and 16K support

After announcing this at CES earlier this year, the HDMI Forum has finally released the latest HDMI 2.2 imagination for devices and accessory manufacturers.

With previous major HDMI amendments, the major update with version 2.2 is an increase in the bandwidth. HDMI 2.2 96GBPS supports the bandwidth, which was twice from HDMI 2.1 which came earlier. However, since it is the HDMI forum, we are talking, and some amount of water is expected to disturbance, HDMI 2.2 will also apply to devices supporting 64 GBPS, 80 GBPS and full 96 GBPS bandwidth.

As usual, there is a big focus to go with this new imagination. This time, we are receiving support for 16K resolution at 60Hz or 120Hz at 120Hz at 120Hz.

But when it is easy to roll your eyes on these figures, a large bandwidth growth in this way also improves more practical resolutions. For example, with a recent launch of 4K 240Hz monitor, you can achieve this resolution and rate combinations on 10-bit or 12-bit colors to combination display stream compression or croma subscripting, something that was not possible earlier. Similarly, you can get 8k 60Hz 4: 4: 4: 4: 4 on 10-bit or 12-bit without compression.

Other features in the new fantasy include the Letty Indication Protocol (LIP), Dynamic HDR support, source-based tone mapping (SBTM), enhanced earc, enhanced gaming features, including VRR, Allm and QFT, Quick Media Switching (QMS), and HDMI Cable Power.

To go with the new imagination, the HDMI Forum has also announced a new standard for cables that will be required to achieve this bandwidth. The previous ultra high speed HDMI standard used for HDMI 2.1 transmission will no longer be sufficient, and you have to look for new Altra96 HDMI branding on cables to ensure compatibility. With ultra high speed HDMI, the HDMI Forum will test and certify the Cables fulfilling the Ultra 96 HDMI imagination and such a cable will have an ultra 96 certified cable label with holograms and QR codes that the customers can scan to verify.
