How the brand become a shadow of its former self

How the brand become a shadow of its former self

Rai: Once a luxurious and innovative smart home company, leading proper smart thermostats and smoke detectors, Nest is now its former shadow, as Google degrades the brand and reduces the number of available products.

In the last few months, Google has devalued the Nest brand by stopping additional products. It began at the end of March when Google pulled the plug over Protect Nest Smart Smoke and CO alarm,

The stock will be available until it sells, and products will be supported for their lives (10 years from the date of construction), but it is effectively sports.

Google has not specifically said why it is shutting down the product, but just a blog post written, “The legacy of Nest Protect continues in our partnership with the first warning, which is to create the next generation alarm alarm that is originally integrated with your existing devices.”

According to Google, first alert (owned by resido, which is also of honeywell) will soon sell a smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarm that will be integrated with existing Nest Protect devices. This device will be available in the US and Canada, but there is no mention of its availability in the UK.

To make things worse, the new devices will work in the Google Home app, something that I have left until I really have to use it for review purposes.

It is a huge shame, as the Nest Protect was one of the best smart smoke alarms. The main issue was that Google did not further develop the product (the current version was released in 2015), and the system did not expand the system with carbon monoxide or heat alarm, so the system is unsuitable where building rules require an alarm in every room.

Other smart interconnected smoke alarm systems, but they do not have polish that was done by Nest Protect.

Close heat

The Nest Thermostat was a beautifully designed smart thermostat. Nest’s co-founder Tony Fadle had an idea for thermostat while building a holiday house, finding that the current products did not do what he wanted.

In fact, I use a Nest Thermostat (3)Third Jean) In a rented house because it is designed so well for that job: it is strong, it is the main operated (no battery to run out), it is easy to control, and you determine the minimum and maximum temperature levels that guests can use.

25 October is coming, nest 1Scheduled tribe Jean and 2Ra Jean users will know that their smart thermostats will no longer offer remote control (through Nest or Google Home Apps), and will only work locally. And for all of us in Europe, you can redeem any new products (eg Nest 4Wan Gen) As Google will not sell them here citing the challenges of Europe’s ‘unique’ heating system.

Nest 3Third General (A 2015 product) and Nest thermostat e (A 2018 product) will continue to get updates for now and still have remote control, but who knows how long it will last? I already plan to dig the thermostat of my nest in the near future.

Decline

These are not the first products that Google has eaten: Nest Secure Alarm System, which was never launched in the UK, was killed in 2020 only three years later. The Nest X Yale Smart Lock (only US) has also been closed, and the stock will be sold during the available available. Would I buy one, even though it was really cheap? No, I will not put it at risk, and buy a smart lock from a separate company like Nuki.

Even with products that are still on sale, such as Nest doorbell (battery) And Nest doorbell (wired)Products are now older in terms of technology and seem to be new versions. Nor nest smart speaker.

There is an argument against the annual recurrent versions of a product, but the complete lack of innovation seems to be far away.

Of course, it does not help that Google forced everyone to go to Google and ruined the nest completely and tried to do everything in the Google Home app. When nest accounts were killed, I was forced to move to Google one.

I have a Google work area account, but it is not enough for smart home products, so I had to create a new free Google account for my smart devices.

The problem with Nest products is that they are not as good in the Google Home app as they were in the Nest app. Where the Nest App was clever and concentrated, the Google Home app is slow and thoughtful. And, Google Home cannot often do anything useful with nesting devices.

Want an automation that will turn your HU lights when a nest security alarm is closed? Difficult. This can be done automatically with work with the nest, but Google closed it. While the Nest Protect is available in the Google Home app, you can only trigger an automation when the protection either starts or stops charging ‘or’ plug in or unplugged ‘. I can’t think of anything more useless.

Use a different smart home platform

There was a time when my house had nest mini and nest hub tools around, and I actively used them with Google Home for my smart home automation, mainly because I was invested heavy in nest products including cameras.

As Google has gradually ruined each Nest product, the need to insert with Google Home is reduced at the point where I only use Google Home and a Nest Mini or Nest Hub if I must be on reviewing a product. Outside him, the Nest Smart Speaker is sent to a drawer.

Nest’s treatment of Google pointed me to the ring. While the ring was purchased by a large technology company, Amazon continued to take care of his purchase, develop and release new products, and to maintain and improve the dedicated app.

When it comes to automation and voice control, there is a ton of better options: Amazon Alexa and Eco device compatibility, ease of use and device are the best overall for the limit of support; Apple house is really luxurious to use and handle my day-to-day automation; Of home Ever since LG bought an 80% stake in the company, it has been increasing in strength, offering incredibly powerful automation to those with the pro hub of their home that wants to dirty their hands. Then, there are smartthas, which have a lot, especially if you have Samsung tools, and people who want to go a little more homebreen have home assistants, which are growing in popularity and device support.

When it comes to smart homes, so many rivals care about their products and future development that Google has started feeling as irrelevant as nest products have been killed.
