Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed an innovative and cost-effective way to detect Sars-Cov-2, responsible for the virus Covid-19This novel technique uses a combination of Bentonite soil and saltwater, providing a simple and more economical option for traditional clinical devices such as PCR and antigen tests. Their findings published in the Peer-Report Journal Applied Clay have the ability to revolutionize the virus, especially in the resource-wise settings and for the preparation of the future epidemic.

This groundbreaking method rests on the principle of sedimentation. Bentonite Clay is famous for its extraordinary exploiting properties and ability to tie with various substances including heavy metals and pollutants. Making on previous researches that soil particles can interact with the virus, the IIT Guwahati team carefully examined how Bentonite Clay especially interacts Sars-Cov-2,

Their research has shown that when the virus is present in a neutral pH saltwater solution at room temperature, it ties effectively with soil particles. This binding accelerates sedimentation, residing more rapidly with virus -filled soil particles. By observing and measuring this quick sedimentation, researchers can accurately determine both the presence and concentration of the virus in a sample.

Some experts say that the implications of this discovery are sufficient. While PCR tests are highly accurate, they are expensive, requiring specialized equipment and trained personnel, and often depend on significant infrastructure, which limit their access to remote or under-regions areas. Antigen testing, while sharp, may be less sensitive than PCR. Conversely, the IIT Guwahati method requires minimal equipment, naturally inexpensive, and provides widely rapid clinical solutions that are suitable for widespread deployment.
