New Delhi. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening citing health reasons. He sent his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu and said that he was leaving the post with immediate effect. In his letter to the President, Dhankar said, “To give priority to health care and to follow medical advice, I resign from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect, according to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution.” Dhankhar (74) took over as Vice President in August 2022.

So let’s know… To fill the vacancy of the post of Vice President, the formal election must be held within 60 days of his resignation. The electorate consists of all members of both houses of Parliament, which use the proportional representation system through single transferable vote.

According to the Constitution, in the event of Vice President being vacant, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha takes over as the Acting Chairman of the Upper House. Currently, the post is with Harivansh Narayan Singh (appointed in August 2022), who will be temporarily working on this post.

On July 16, 2022, the BJP declared Dhankhar as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the post of Vice President. In the Vice Presidential election held on August 6, 2022, Dhankhar defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva by 528 votes out of 710 valid votes, and 74.37 percent votes, which is the biggest difference of victory since 1992.
