Orthodox leader Kemi Badenoch has called for abolishing windfall tax on oil and gas companies and said that new licenses should be issued for drilling in the North Sea.

Addressing the Scottish Orthodox Party Conference in Edinburgh, Badenoch said that the tax -energy is known as the profit levy – it should be removed before its current 2030 ending.

Levy was brought by the previous orthodox UK government, but Badenoch said that his party had found this wrong.

Opposition politicians criticized Badenoch’s comments and the final fuel poverty alliance described him as “out of touch”.

The Tory leader also claimed that Scotland had “declined” under the left parties and the SNP had ruined millions on “freedom publicity”.

Last year, the increase in windfall tax in the UK government budget means that oil and gas producers are now paying 78% headline tax rates.

Scottish conservative leader Russell Findle earlier stated that it would be “a complete function of national self-loss”, which would not continue drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea.

He told BBC’s Good Morning Scotland Program: “We are the party that fully supports the North Sea oil and gas industry.

“The SNP in Edinburgh is completely hostile to any form of new exploration, and is exactly the same with Sir Kire Stmper and Ed Milliband in London.

“They want to leave this oil and gas in the North Sea and import oil and gas from the front. It is absolutely no meaning.”

‘Out of reach’

Simon Francis of the end Fuel Putty alliance replied to Badenoca, saying: “Even with windfall tax in place, the energy industry alone made more than £ 115bn in profit in 2024.

“Meanwhile, the average domestic energy bills are hundreds and hundreds of pounds that were before the energy crisis began.”

SNP MSP Kevin Stewart said: “Tories ruined our economy, presided over to increase domestic bills and ripped Scotland from the European Union against our wish.”

Dame Jackie Bailey, deputy leader of Scottish Labor, claimed that toris are “instead of scots” on the edge of oil and gas companies.
