The beloved ‘Van Rani’ toy train at Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is poised for a grand return with a modern Vistadome upgrade, four years after it was suspended following cyclone damage.

Trial runs for the refurbished train, now equipped with glass roofs and wide side windows, began on 30 June 2025, with a full-capacity trial completed successfully on 5 July. Daily technical checks concluded on 25 July, paving the way for its reintroduction.

Van Rani’s Journey Over The Years

Originally launched in 1974 and sponsored by the Tata Group, Van Rani operated on a 762mm narrow-gauge track and became an iconic feature of SGNP. Its legacy, now spanning 50 years, holds deep emotional resonance for generations of Mumbaikars.

The service was halted in May 2021 after Cyclone Tauktae caused extensive damage. Efforts to revive the train were spearheaded by Union Minister and local MP Piyush Goyal, whose office confirmed that operations would resume soon.

Now battery-operated, the updated Van Rani will run with four coaches, each embellished with wildlife illustrations native to SGNP. The red-and-black Vistadome train promises panoramic forest views and metro-style seating for enhanced comfort. A second open-air train is also expected.

The 2.3-km route meanders through Krishnagiri Upvan, mini zoo areas, and artificial tunnels. With a capacity of 80 passengers, the train will offer a vibrant, eco-conscious experience.

Krishnagiri station, inspired by a butterfly, nears completion with accessible ramps and artistic murals underway. The SGNP administration is exploring branding opportunities on trains and stations to fund park upkeep.

“This is not just a joyride, but a step toward sustainable tourism and biodiversity awareness,” said Goyal, expressing hope the train’s return will strengthen North Mumbai’s tourism appeal.
