Netflix uses AI effects for first time to cut costs

Netflix says that it has first used visual effects created by generative artificial intelligence (AI) in its original TV show.

Streaming giant’s co-main executive Ted Sarandos stated that AI, which produces videos and images on the basis of signs, was used to create a scene of the collapse of a building in Argentina Sciences fiction Show, The Eatot.

He said that technology allowed the production team to complete sequences at a rapid and low cost.

The use of generative AI is controversial in the entertainment industry, it worries on concerns that it makes material using the work of others without their consent and it is feared that it will change humans.

Mr. Sarandos made his comment as Netflix announced a 16% increase in revenue of $ 11bn (£ 8.25bn) for three months by the end of June compared to the same period last year. Profit increased from $ 2.1BN to $ 3.1bn.

Generic AI used in ETANOT helped its production team He said he said that he had used traditional special effect tools to complete a sequence, showing the collapse of a building in Buenos Aires, he said.

“Its cost is not possible for a show just in that budget.

“This sequence is actually long ago [generative] AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film. So the creators were thrilled with the result, “said Mr. Sarandos.

AI was one of the major concerns raised during the Hollywood strike in 2023.

during Three months walkoutScreen Actors Guild -Amrican Federation of Television and Radio Artists Union called for strict regulation of the use of AI.

Some people in the industry have criticized the use of AI in the film, insulting the craft.

In 2024, the film Mogul Tyler Perry stopped plans for the $ 800 meter expansion of his studio in Atlanta, fearing that the AI-based video will affect rapid advancement jobs.

At that time AI tools like Openai’s Sora were being announced, which can cause the quality of footage to be amazed, which can make with simple text signs, but also worry about job safety.

Deavier Yun, co-founder of Singapore Animation Studios Cravefx, said that it was not surprising as to adopt Netflix’s generic AI as more prominent studios were welcoming technology.

He added that generic AI adds to the list of digital tools that can choose visual effect artists to bring ideas in life, he said.

“It sounds like some time. AI definitely opens the gate to allow small studios to get big budget -looking scenes,” Mr. Yun said.

“Ultimately, it is an artist who decides what is in the last image, not AI.”
