On ‘Princess of Power,’ Marina Finds a New Sense of Freedom—and Has a Whole Lot of Fun

Take me back at the beginning of writing records. I read that you were coming out of the quite turbulent period with your health, and that you started writing it as almost something, which helped you get out of it. Is that right?

This is accurate, although in fact, when I started writing records, it was no longer very turbulent. I was out of bad area. I was originally, about the seven -year -old health issues, which I could not find at the bottom. And then before summer I started writing this record, I was really committed to recover and find out what they were causing. And so the first song I wrote was “everybadi nose I am Sad,” which is enthusiastically, but also in a way in a way. And then as I started writing some more songs, such as “rollercoster” and “butterfly.” I was listening to Kylie’s load [Minogue]Many music of the 70s, some Abba and Madonna, of course, which has always been such a big impact for me. I think such a big element of this album is playing, and is re -awakening that part of its own. I had not yet felt it for so long.

Why did you feel like the right single to lead with “butterfly”? Obviously, the butterfly metaphor speaks for itself, but with those jani vocals in the chorus, it felt like a big swing …

Yes, I know that I do not always make it easy for myself. [Laughs.] I know this is a poignant song. But I could not separate it from the fact that it had to come first. I love a concept, and so how I was unveiling it makes me understand as a story, and I could not imagine something else.

I want to ask you about “Kyumiyamo”, as well as that title. Do you remember where you were when that word first came to your head? And how did the song come out from there?

I think I was in the studio on my own, just writing. I think I actually came with the first title. I was looking at the load of pictures of old glamorous women, and it was actually the focal point of the track, but in a foolish, playful way. I think, being 39, I am clearly thinking about aging and how I want to walk in this next chapter as a woman, especially with a public-focused job. And by seeing the big, powerful women really inspired me. One of the biggest lies that we have been told as women or as girls, as you grow up, you lose your value. And by trying to stop the process of aging, you deny yourself a lot of power which is now on the other side of not being young. Sophia Loren was a big inspiration. Salma Hayekobviously. He is just a fab in every way. I think as women living in patriarchal society, we always need art – whether it is movies, or music, or books – which support our confidence and empowerment. So it was about “cuntissimo”.
