Pakistan has nominated former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as its interim red-ball head coach. The team ended at the bottom of the table in the 2023-25 cycle of the World Test Championship.

Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was extended to the post of Pakistan’s acting Red-Ball Head Coach until the conclusion of his current contract on Monday, which lasts until April next year. Mahmud signed a two -year contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board in April last year, which was a supporting coach in forms with Jason Gillespie (Test) and South Africa’s Gary Kirsten (limited overs), which both have moved forward.
“Pakistan Cricket Board today declared Azhar Mahmood as a red-ball head coach of Pakistan’s men’s team. Azhar will work in this role until the conclusion of his current contract. An experienced cricket mind, Azhar Mahmood stepped into a role with an impressive portfolio of experience. PCB said in a statement
PCB said, “His deep knowledge about the game, jointly with international performance on the hands in the English county circuit and proven success, makes him extraordinaryly well suited to this situation.”
The PCB highlighted Mahmood’s achievements in winning the county championship title for Surrey.
“His red-ball Pedigri is outlined by two County Championship titles-an achievement that speaks of his leadership, strategic acumen and unwavering commitment to excellence. PCB is confident that under Azhar’s guidance, the red-ball squad will increase in strength, discipline and performance on the global stage.”
Mahmood, 50, played 21 Tests and 143 Odis for Pakistan between 1996 and 2007.
