Prithviraj, Kajol & Ibrahim Ali Khan Deliver A Patriotic Thriller With Heart

Sarzameen review: Patriotism, cross-border tension, and Kashmir have long been explored in Indian cinema, but ‘Sarzameen’, now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, attempts to approach the theme from a fresh emotional angle. Backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the film surprises first with its intriguing cast , Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kajol, and Ibrahim Ali Khan, who has been under the spotlight ever since his appearance in ‘Naadaniyan’. The trailer promised an engaging drama, and to a large extent, the film delivers on that promise.

Sarzameen plot

‘Sarzameen’ follows the story of Colonel Vijay Menon (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a patriotic army officer who lives with his wife Meher (Kajol) and their son Harman (Ibrahim Ali Khan). Trouble begins when enemies from across the border set their sights on Harman. They try to coerce Menon into taking an action he firmly resists, setting off a chain of events that threaten to rip apart the family. What follows is a gripping tale of sacrifice, integrity, and unexpected turns, especially one twist towards the climax that completely flips the narrative.

How is Sarzameen?

This is a film that wears its patriotism on its sleeve without becoming preachy. What sets ‘Sarzameen’ apart is the emotional depth it brings to familiar tropes. The narrative doesn’t just focus on national security but also explores intimate relationships, between father and son, husband and wife, and mother and son. These emotional beats form the heart of the film. The pacing remains taut, avoiding unnecessary digressions, and the cinematography, background score, and songs blend well with the tone of the story. The ending, in particular, leaves a strong impact.

Performances

Prithviraj Sukumaran proves once again why he is among the most versatile actors in Indian cinema. His portrayal of a principled officer torn between duty and family is powerful and grounded. Kajol brings gravitas and delivers a standout moment in the film’s climax. Ibrahim Ali Khan surprises with his screen presence and improved performance, a marked departure from the criticism he received earlier. ‘Sarzameen’ seems like the right launchpad he needed. Mihir Ahuja also leaves a mark in a supporting role.

Writing & direction

Written by Ayush Soni and directed by Kayoze Irani, the film manages to strike a fine balance between patriotic drama and emotional storytelling. The script is strong in its intent, and the direction keeps the narrative engaging without slipping into melodrama. The integration of nationalistic themes with personal dilemmas has been handled thoughtfully.

Verdict

‘Sarzameen’ is a commendable attempt at telling a familiar story with new emotional depth. It blends patriotism with family bonds in a way that feels authentic and moving. With solid performances and a gripping final act, it’s worth a watch.
