Doctors residents in England have once again voted in favor of the strike action, in the latest chapter in a long -running salary dispute.
After an increase of 22% in the last two years, doctors were previously known as junior doctors, awarded 5.4% increments for this financial year.
But the British Medical Association (BMA) says that really real wages are about 20% lower than in 2008 and are seeking “salary restoration”.
A government spokesperson said that the pay talks would not be reopened: “We cannot be more generous than before.”
BMA said 55% of its 48,000 resident doctors voted in the ballot supporting 90% industrial action.
The union’s Junior Doctors Committee, Ross Neuvoud and Melissa Ryan’s co-heads said they would seek a new negotiation with the government and still had time to stop a walkout.
He said, “Our salary may decline but our desire to fight remains strong.” “We all need a reliable salary proposal and no one needs a strike.”
The Sangh now has a mandate for possible industrial action for six months by January 2026.
The government said it was “disappointing” that BMA was threatened with industrial action after doctors were honored with an increase of 28.9% in the last three years.
A Downing Street spokesman said, “We are not going to reopen the conversation on salary.”
“Resident doctors have received the highest pay award in the public sector for two consecutive years and we may not be more generous this year.”
55% turnout in voting means, even with those who voted in favor of more than 90% of the people, less than half of the eligible doctors actually supported the strike action, the government said.
Long -lasting dispute
Resident doctors participated in 11 separate strikes during 2023 and 2024, causing hundreds of outpatient appointments and other hospital processes to be canceled.
Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of NHS Confederation, who represents the provider of NHS services, said that a strike may endanger to endure efforts to cut the waiting list in England.
He said, “It is disappointing that despite ending the priority of resident doctors after entering the office, the government is now back a year ago,” he said.
“There is also a risk that these attacks increase tension within different staffing groups, discussing industrial action with nurses and other employees as well.”
Nurse and advisor
The word resident doctor can cover anyone, who has graduated from medical school through ten years or more experiences.
The BMA has said that other senior employee groups, including advisors and specialist doctors, will soon be asked whether they are ready to participate in industrial action after offering 4% increment.
