Sussex Police officers take second jobs to pay the bills

According to the latest data released by the Sussex Police Federation, police officers in Sussex are doing a second job to meet in the end.

Federation President Rafael Siyofi stated that the data showed that “one of the most expensive counties outside London is struggling to survive on the salary of a police officer”.

The latest figures of Sussex Police show that in May 2025, 126 officers were registered as a second job.

Adrian Rutherford, director of the People’s Services for Surrey and Sussex Police, said: “We recognize the difficult financial environment that our officers and employees are living inside. It is coupled with tight financial conditions that all forces face across the country.”

Mr. Siyofi said: “We face some of the most troubled events of society and regularly put ourselves in the way of harm, yet some of us are forced to take other jobs so that we can meet in communities we serve.”

At the national level, more than 4,000 officials received approval for secondary employment in 2024, doubled the number recorded in 2019.

Police Federation of England and Wales have described the trend as a “harmful prosecution” that the police pay is how far and is calling the government to take action.
