The 7 Best Ice Packs for Coolers The Spruce Has Tested

The 7 Best Ice Packs for Coolers The Spruce Has Tested

Ah, summer is here—and that means it’s time for a laid-back outing complete with a nicely chilled picnic. I love playing host and planning a fun, al fresco menu with some caprese kabobs, cheese and crackers, and chilled sparkling drinks to keep the chatter and good times rolling.

To keep my picnics easy, I’ve learned and applied a few smart tricks over the years: choosing the right blanket, grabbing a totable ice chest, and bringing a supply of garbage bags. After a few mishaps, I’ve also come to realize that selecting the best ice packs is just as essential as preparing tasty treats for your friends and family.

Anyone who has packed a cooler knows that an ice pack is far less messy (and much more convenient) than filling a cooler with a bag of ice cubes. While condensation is to be expected with ice packs, it’s not as worrisome as opening your cooler to find that your food has become flooded with a slushy, spoiled mess.

We tested 12 reusable ice packs, in both hard- and soft-sided coolers and lunchboxes, for more than 100 hours. We looked at well-known brands such as Igloo, Arctic Zone, and Cool Coolers to see how they stacked up on 23 different outings, evaluating each ice pack on its design, performance, quality, and value. These seven options are ready to support your summer outings and beyond.

What We Like

  • Comes in 5 different sizes

  • Lightweight; doesn’t weigh your cooler down

  • Long-lasting chill

  • Fits well in a standard, 16-quart cooler

At less than $5, you really can’t go wrong with the Igloo Maxcold Ice Block. During testing, I tried the large size, which is 5.67 by 8.75 inches, and found that the hard, blue shell was leakproof on a 2.5-hour-long car ride on a warm day.

After packing this ice pack for a couple of other gatherings, I was most impressed with how long this lightweight yet durable ice block stays chilled. When I arrived at my destination, my cooler felt as if everything had been stored in the fridge the entire trip. Even after I purposefully left the ice pack out for 24 hours, it was still noticeably frozen and cold to the touch.

While this option comes in five sizes from small to extra-large, the large version fits nicely in my 16-quart Igloo cooler. It has a slightly 3-D trapezoid shape, where the sides are slightly angled, so it’s not a perfect rectangle that can lie flush. You also only get one per purchase, while other picks on our list come as a larger set.

Still, it would be ideal to buy another ice pack in the same size to sandwich food items with cold packs on both ends, ensuring that your goodies stay upright and perfectly cold. In real life, this ice pack is thin enough to lie flat at the bottom of my cooler or on its side, too, without taking up too much space.

And although it does sweat after an hour—as most ice packs like to do—it’s a cinch to wipe dry and keep clean as needed.

What’s inside an ice pack? Most ice packs are made with water, sodium polyacrylate (a thickening agent), and occasionally propylene glycol, which allows the ice pack to freeze, getting colder than 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Four of the Fit & Fresh Cool Coolers Reusable Slim Ice Packs

These might just be the cutest ice packs you can get, plus they’re ideal for snacks on-the-run. During testing, we found that their compact, slim shape and BPA-free construction lends itself well to stashing them in a lunchbox or stacking them up in a cooler.

After a roughly three-hour car ride, we also discovered that these packs are leakproof and fit nicely in our insulated cooler built to house 18 cans of soda. Each ice pack looks like a square doughnut, with a visible hole in the middle that makes them easy to pick up and move around.

The ice packs tend to freeze rock-solid with a slight bubble under the doughnut hole, which may eventually lead to cracking over time. That said, at $10 for a pack of four, this set is an amazing value, and you could possibly prevent that bubbling effect by laying them flat in your freezer.

Given their smaller dimensions, we do recommend using the packs as a set to keep food items chilled for short excursions. (Think, three hours on average.) If you’d rather use them one at a time for individually packed lunches, the eye-catching color options—far different than the blue hue of our top pick—make it a breeze to assign one color to each family member.

What We Like

  • Stackable and thin

  • Easy to grab thanks to doughnut-hole design

  • Available in sets of 4, 6, 8, or 10

Similar to our best value pick, the Healthy Packers Original Cool Pack comes as a reusable set of four and is great for daily use in a lunchbox.

They are a tad bigger (roughly two inches longer) than our best value option and sport two holes, which make them easy to grab. The stackable and thin design is what makes them a particularly great fit for soft- and hard-sided lunchboxes—plus, with their hard shell, they are easy to clean and leakproof, too.

During testing, we loved that the plastic packs maintained their shape. We were able to fit all four packs into a small, hard-sided cooler, as well, along with six drinks to create a mini-fridge-like environment.

You can buy Healthy Packers in sets of four, six, eight, or 10, too, with a four-pack costing just a couple more dollars than our best value pick. Unfortunately, these ice packs just don’t come in a full range of colors.

As our largest and thickest ice pack on this list, we love that the Cooler Shock Freeze Packs, which come in a set of three, have the potential to stay frozen the longest. In our experience, they last for an impressive 24 hours, making them super ideal for longer trips.

Now, these ice packs do require some assembly, because the ice packs come as 10-by-14-inch bags filled with powder. It’ll only take a few minutes, but you’ll need to add your own tap water to get the packs started. Once the excess air is pressed out of the bags and they’re tightly capped, we could count on them never leaking.

As one of our softest and most flexible ice pack options, we were concerned that these packs would get easily punctured, but this set is surprisingly durable and well-constructed with thick, nylon-reinforced material, so you also don’t have to worry about taking them to tailgates, on a beach trip, or hiking.

Plus, they’re built with a handle, so it’s comfortable to hold them while transporting them to an ice chest or freezer.

If you’re planning a large gathering, or you’re just packing for an extended road trip, consider the Everlasting Ice RX Ice Packs, which are 9.75 x 8.5 inches and come in a pack of four.

Compared to our other options on this list, and the other options we tested that didn’t make it to the list, these four, large ice packs allow you to cover your bases in a larger cooler. In fact, they are mostly flat, so they fit nicely alongside the walls of a family-sized, hard-sided ice chest.

As soft packs, they do puff out slightly once frozen, so you’ll need to take that into consideration as you fill your cooler up with food. However, during our testing, the ice packs did a solid job of keeping our lunch cold for five hours. (They lasted up to 12 hours at a time.)

We were also pleasantly surprised that all four fit well in our freezer, without taking up a lot of space—though, this could differ depending on the size of your refrigerator.

What We Like

  • Versatile, bendable design

  • Can wrap around food and drink items

If you prefer an ice pack that can mold to any shape, we suggest the Arctic Zone Titan Ice Pack, which comes in a set of two and is soft and easy to bend even after it’s frozen.

During testing, the puncture-resistant ice packs conformed nicely to the shape of our coolers, both soft- and hard-sided. The pair easily folds to fit along the bottom of a cooler or on just a side, depending on your preferences and needs.

Unlike others on this list, they can also wrap conveniently around food or drinks, making them a versatile, super functional, and leakproof option wherever you are going and for whatever cooler you choose to use. Though, they may be a bit too big for a lunchbox.

We noted that these are a bit on the thick side, measuring a little over one inch, which means they may take up just a little more space when stacked in your freezer, too.

Two of the Arctic Ice Tundra Series Reusable Ice Packs

What We Like

  • Sturdy, hard-shell design

  • Only take six hours to freeze

  • Hold shape without bulging

Honest truth: We accidentally dropped this medium-sized Arctic Ice Tundra Series ice pack from about 5 feet above a cement floor when it slipped out of our freezer. Good news—it survived, without any cracks or dents. As we observed, its heavy-duty, plastic design is up for adventures, and that makes this chiller one of our favorites.

This ice pack comes in four assorted sizes, takes only six hours to freeze, and holds its shape nicely. It’s easy to move around and fits well in an 18-by-24-inch cooler.

It can stay cold for roughly 6 hours tops, so it’s not the most long-lasting option on our list, but it’s still a great pick if you need something particularly durable, and comes in a pack of two so your cooler doesn’t have to rely on a single pack.

Final Verdict

Our top pick for an ice pack for a cooler is the Igloo Maxcold Ice Block, because it has a long-lasting chill factor and a slim profile, and is less than $5. Plus, we love that it comes in five different sizes, including one for lunchboxes and another for extra-large coolers. For packed lunches, beach bags, or even grocery totes, we suggest the smaller-sized Healthy Packers Original Cool Pack. This set is stackable and easy to grab, thanks to a double-doughnut-hole design.

How We Tested the Ice Packs for Coolers

We’ve tested a dozen ice packs, both personal-sized and extra-large, from brands like Igloo, Cooler Shock, and Arctic Zone, and put them to work in our own coolers. In total, we’ve taken 23 different excursions with our ice packs. To find the best options, each ice pack is rigorously tested on a variety of traits, listed below.

We tested if the ice packs became messy or leaked during outings.

Prep Work: Before we even begin to load up our coolers, we look to see if water needs to be added to the ice packs for the initial freeze. We follow the instructions, if included, and note how intuitive the process is. Is it messy? Is the cap secure? After each one is ready to use, we place the ice pack in our freezer for 24 hours, before we hit the road, pack a lunch, or sit out to enjoy the sun in our backyard.

Size and shape play an important role in which ice pack works best for you.

Design: We observe whether there are any notable features of the ice pack, such as whether they have a built-in handle, can wrap around items, or are available in colorful options. We also check each ice pack’s measurements to understand more how they fit in our own personal coolers, ranging from everyday lunch totes to family-sized ice chests.

While taking the ice packs on 23 unique adventures, we tested how long they will actually stay cold.

Quality: We assess how durable the materials are for each ice pack, and if they are hard-sided plastic or soft. We note how they hold up in their frozen and melted states. Do they puncture easily? Do they drip, or are they leakproof?

Performance: We inspect the ice packs after one hour, eight hours, and 24 hours to assess how cold they are and what they look like at each interval. Do they have cracks? Are there bulges? Does the pack melt quickly? In general, ice packs are always a cleaner and longer-lasting option than ice itself.

Value: Last, we consider all of our experiences and outings—whether we drove from Connecticut to Maine or took a trip to Upstate New York—when looking at the price of the ice pack and rate its overall value. Like with most products, we quickly realize that when it comes to ice packs, expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better—and if an ice pack comes as a set, that tends to add instant value to your purchase.

What to Look for in an Ice Pack

Consider Size, Shape, and How It’ll Fit Into Your Cooler

First, you’ll need to head down to your basement shelves or out to your garage and dust off the cooler you own. Do you need an ice pack for your personal lunchbox? Are you taking a camping trip with the whole family and packing an extra-large ice chest on wheels?

Most ice packs come in square or rectangular shapes and are either hard-sided or soft. Some styles, like the Igloo Maxcold Ice Block, our overall best option, come in a variety of sizes, such as a half-sleeve or extra-large, to accommodate your every need.

As you shop, you’ll need to visualize how the ice pack will actually fit in your cooler. (No one wants to play a challenging game of Tetris to fit everything in!) You may even need to compare the dimensions of your container and the ice pack itself.

Testing Takeaway

As we tested, we especially liked thin ice packs, such as the half-an-inch thick Cool Coolers Slim Ice Packs, to wedge up top, on the bottom, or along the sides of a lunch tote or cooler. A thin design seemed to maximize chill as well as space.

Think About How Long It Will Stay Frozen—And How Long It Takes to Chill

As we tested, we looked at how long the ice pack would last in its frozen state. Smaller options are great for a four-hour timespan, while larger ones, like Cooler Shock 3 Cooler Size Freeze Packs (our pick for an ice pack that stays cold the longest), can last as long as 24 hours. Our picks last from around 3 hours to around 24 hours, with the average being about 6 to 8 hours.

We froze each of our reusable ice packs for 24 hours for our tests, but some ice packs are ready to go in a fraction of that time. The ice packs from the Arctic Ice Tundra Series, for example, took just 6 hours to freeze.

You’ll need to allot how much time it’ll take to freeze your chillers before they’re fully ready to use. Again, ice packs do typically stay chilled longer than ice itself, as we saw firsthand in our tests.

Our favorite ice packs last from around 3 hours to around 24 hours.

Plan for Versatility

Before you buy, you’ll have to consider the number of ice packs you might need for your intended use or outing. Whether that’s one or six ice packs, you should estimate how many hours you’ll want to keep items chilled and plan to put several in a container if size allows.

You’ll also want to factor in what types of food you’re packing and how fast they are likely to spoil. Items such as a casserole dish of Jello or a container of mayonnaise-laden potato salad should be kept cold at all times, especially during warm weather.

For a versatile and value-driven option, we recommend shopping for a set, like the Everlasting Ice RX Rapid Performance Ice Packs, our best for large coolers pick, which come with four, generously-sized ice packs to perfectly insulate your ice chest on all sides. By covering all of your bases, you’re smartly keeping your food items safely chilled.

We also like the Arctic Zone Titan Deep Freeze Ice Pack, our best for any situation pick, which is the only option on this list that’s bendable and can mold to whatever items you are chilling.

Assess Possibilities of Leaks or Condensation

Lastly, condensation is pretty common with ice packs. That’s why we specifically favor designs that have a durable, waterproof exterior. All of our picks are leakproof, avoiding mishaps of ice pack gel accidentally spilling onto food and drinks.

The majority of our favorite options are free of any type of lid, too, but if you opt for one that you need to fill yourself, such as the Cooler Shock 3 Cooler Size Freeze Packs, you’ll need to make sure the cap is secure before you use it.

And because ice packs tend to get dirty with food stains, you’ll want to look for quality materials that are puncture-resistant and easy to clean. We tend to like hard-sided plastic, like what you’ll find with the Igloo Maxcold Ice Block (our top pick), because it’s durable, a breeze to wipe, and totally leakproof.

If and when some condensation does happen, plan to have some paper towels or napkins on hand to wipe the outside of your ice packs and prevent any puddles in your cooler.

Why Trust The Spruce?

I’m Michelle Lau, an editor at The Spruce who writes about organizing, cleaning, and home decor products, such as shopping carts and kitchen cabinet organizers. For this story, I analyzed all of our thorough ice pack testing results. We used 12 different ice packs for real-life adventures across the country, looking at each option’s material, performance, design, and value.

I also participated in the test, gaining personal experience with our overall best pick, Igloo’s Maxcold Ice Block. Although I spent 2.5 hours stuck in bumper-to-bumper California traffic on a 76-degree day, I found that this trusty ice pack kept my potluck broccoli salad just as cold as when I took it out from my fridge in the early morning.
