HDMI 2.2 and new ALTRA96 cables will also enable 480Hz including high resolution and fresh rates 4K, 240Hz at 8K, 120Hz at 10K and 16k at 60Hz. It will also handle unprocessed video formats at 60Hz at 8K with 10-bit and 12-bit colors and 240 Hz at 4K.

Given how difficult it is to find native 8K content, do not expect cable providers or console manufacturers to offer 16K soon. HDMI 2.1 has been around since 2017 and hardware manufacturers still do not take full advantage of imagination, so the resolutions of increased bandwidth and 2.2 should help proof the HDMI specification in the future for the years to come.

The HDMI Forum is also hoping that new specifications will make it easy for consumers to know which cable they need to use. HDMI cables are currently differentiated with names including standard, high speed, premium high speed and ultra high speed, which provides no specifics on their abilities. With HDMI 2.2, Ultra96 will make it clear that a cable supports new specifications and bandwidth up to 96GBPS.

The HDMI 2.2 will also include the new delaying signal protocol (LIP), which was also declared in January last January. This feature is designed to manufacture on audio and video synchronization reforms offered with HDMI 2.1, especially for setup where signals are bouncing through a soundbar or av receiver before reaching the TV or projector.
