“Today, a 13 -year -old girl died due to continuous injuries in the Kaliganj PS area of Krishnnagar police district.

TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed won a by-election by 50,049 votes. While Ahmed got 102,759 votes, BJP-candidate Ashish Ghosh got 52,710 votes.

The by -election was required after the death of former TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year. Nasiruddin Ahmed was the father of Alifa Ahmed. TMC has been winning the seat since 2011.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the death of a young girl in an explosion in Baroochandar in Krishnanagar Police district. My prayers and views are with the family during their grief. The police will take strong and decisive legal action against the criminal as soon as possible,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote,

Ziaul Sheikh, a local resident, who was also beaten to beat, said, “TMC workers and supporters were playing with green, shouting slogans, crackers were bursting. Crude bombs were being thrown indiscriminately in the houses of CPI (M) and Congress workers and Congress workers and Congress. The same bomb was killed by a bomb.

TMC first won the seat in 2011 when it came to power to end the 34 -year -old left regime. Nasiruddin Ahmed was elected TMC MLA. In 2016, he lost the seat to Congress-CPI (M) coalition candidate Sheikh Hasanuzaman. However, Hasanuzaman later joined Trinmool. Naseeruddin retrieved Kaliganj seat in the 2021 assembly elections. The seat became vacant after his death.

By-elections are being seen as a litmus test for both the ruling TMC and its arch rival, which is the BJP before the 2026 assembly elections.
