It was not long ago that Pakistan’s Army Chief, Asim MunirIt was known only for his backward -looking approach to international relations and Pakistani identity. But last week he was given a date for lunch with Trump, which, according to the army, was sufficiently entangled for the President to grow from one hour to two hours. How uncommon is how unusual it is: No US President has ever hosted the Pakistani Army Chief on equal terms.
Both Munir and Pakistan’s citizen politicians are very independent of praise for Trump. He repeatedly thanked him for bringing a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and even announced that he nominated the President for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump saw himself as a peacekeeper, and has made it clear that he feels that he is entitled to a Nobel – and there is no doubt that only grateful to another country who seems to agree.
New Delhi, who is angry with the suggestion that Trump was to do anything with a break in enmity between India and Pakistan, is watching this new proximity with more than a little more puzzle. Trump again realizes what so many presidents have – that any partnership only gets you deeply and it is difficult to find real partners for peace. Therefore, he will also learn that the Pakistani army cannot be trusted.
In the interim, India maintains its distance from America. Quite unusually, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told everyone that he had refused to visit Trump last week. It was probably a wise decision, given that Muni was in the city at the same time. He would not want to ambush into a picture with Munir, especially a one who stood near Trump. Every time the US gets entangled in the Middle East, Pakistani installation increases a privileged position in Washington. If Trump is actually committed to control Iran’s ambitions, the Islamic Republic’s relationship with the eastern neighbor takes on a new importance. But this time things will not be quite simple for the generals. Given the continuous popularity of the anti-jail American firebrand and former Prime Minister Imran KhanMunir has a political criterion to walk. Islamabad announced that it had announced to nominate Trump for Nobel, condemning his favorite peacekeeping to bomb Iran’s nuclear installations. Nor can Munir separate Beijing at any point, on which the army depends on arms, subsidy and moral support.
But the threat to Pakistan is much deeper than that. In the last few years, as the country told about an economic crisis and climate change, there was also a real hope that its elite would eventually recognize the importance of improvement.
