Yowri Museweni, the 80 -year -old President of Uganda for a long time, has been declared a Governing Party candidate in the next year’s presidential election, making an attempt to expand about about 40 years of power for him.

In his acceptance speech, Museveni said that he responded to the call and if selected, would proceed with his mission to convert Uganda into a “high medium -income country”.

Critics of Museweni say that he has ruled with an iron hand since seizing power in 1986 as a rebellious leader.

He has won every election held since then, and the constitution has been revised twice to remove the age and duration limit so that they can be allowed to remain in office.

Pop star-petitician Bobby Wine is expected to be the main challenger of Museweni in the election for the next January.

Wine told BBC in April If he was nominated by his party, the National Unity Platform, he would run against Mousseweni, but was getting “difficult” in protest due to the growing state oppression.

“Being in opposition in Uganda means a terrorist being labeled,” he said.

Wine, whose real name is Robert Kygulni, lost allegations of rigging and allegations of opposition in a pole from 35% to 59% from Museweni in 2021.

Another prominent opposition politician, Kisa Basigia, has been in custody since November after being accused of treason. He denies the allegation, saying that his arrest is political.

In his acceptance speech at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) conference on Saturday, Museveni said that he had brought about stability and progress in Uganda.

He said it was important that Uganda “did not remember the bus of history as it happened in the past when Europe had changed and Africa had stabilized and was slaves”.

Museweni said he wanted Uganda to take a “qualitative jump”, and become “highly medium -income countries”.
